DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) faces short-term and long-term challenges in selecting and recruiting an enlisted force to meet personnel requirements associated with diverse and changing missions. The DoD has established standards for aptitudes/abilities, medical conditions, and physical fitness to be used in selecting recruits who are most likely to succeed in their jobs and complete the first term of service (generally 36 months). In 1999, the Committee on the Youth Population and Military Recruitment was established by the National Research Council (NRC) in response to a request from the DoD. One focus of the committee's work was to examine trends in the youth population relative to the needs of the military and the standards used to screen applicants to meet these needs. When the committee began its work in 1999, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force had recently experienced recruiting shortfalls. By the early 2000s, all the Services were meeting their goals; however, in the first half of calendar year 2005, both the Army and the Marine Corps experienced recruiting difficulties and, in some months, shortfalls. When recruiting goals are not being met, scientific guidance is needed to inform policy decisions regarding the advisability of lowering standards and the impact of any change on training time and cost, job performance, attrition, and the health of the force. Assessing Fitness for Military Enlistment examines the current physical, medical, and mental health standards for military enlistment in light of (1) trends in the physical condition of the youth population; (2) medical advances for treating certain conditions, as well as knowledge of the typical course of chronic conditions as young people reach adulthood; (3) the role of basic training in physical conditioning; (4) the physical demands and working conditions of various jobs in today's military services; and (5) the measures that are used by the Services to characterize an individual's physical condition. The focus is on the enlistment of 18- to 24-year-olds and their first term of service.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKSo you're walking out of school and parked at the gate is a new, bright red Ford Mustang with a hulk of a man in the front seat. He's sporting a razor cut and wraparound shades. Before you can pass he's out of the car and blocking your path. “Mind if I take a minute”—he has you by the arm now—“to tell you about the great life in today's Army and why you should seriously think about signing up?” The armed forces are having a tough time attracting new recruits lately, in no small part due to the mess in Iraq. Young people are getting wise to the many excellent reasons not to join the U.S. Military, and this handy book brings them all together, combining accessible writing with hard facts and devastating personal testimony. Contributors with firsthand experience point out the dangers facing soldiers, describe the tricks used by recruiters, and emphasize that there really are other options, even in a sluggish economy. It's essential reading for anyone thinking of signing up.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe purpose of this book is to provide valuable information to prospective or new Navy Enlisted Sailors. Quality decisions result from facts and realistic viewpoints. This book provides vision only experience can muster, and answers to questions you would never think to ask. Too many times I have looked back and said, "if I had only known that back then." Hindsight is always 20/20. My intention is to turn my hindsight into your foresight! Nothing in this book will ever strive to sell you or dissuade you. It is offered simply as a means to facilitate quality decision-making. An Enlisted tour in the Navy will be a life-impacting endeavor. You will invariably change as a person, as will your view of the world. Enlisted Sailors need a mentor to provide a path towards success and happiness. A civilian pondering Enlistment needs a mentor to provide a looking glass into their prospective future. I intend to provide an informative, occasionally humorous, and always insightful view of the U.S. Navy. This view is based on my personal experiences and the experiences of those I have known. I will also provide facts and resources to information every Sailor should know. All factual information was true and correct when this book was written. However, I suggest you always seek out the most current and correct information. As clearly stated in Section 9.5.b. of any Enlistment Contract, "Laws and regulations that govern military personnel may change without notice to me. Such changes may affect my status, pay, allowances, benefits, and responsibilities as a member of the Armed Forces REGARDLESS of the provisions of this enlistment/re-enlistment document." That basically means, whatever you think you know today could change tomorrow, or in the next sixty seconds! Most importantly, I thank you for taking time to read my words. If you are already Enlisted, choose to Enlist, or pursue a civilian future, I wish you great successes and contentment. As they say in the Navy, "Fair Winds and Following Seas."
