The creation of the Confederate States of America and the subsequent Civil War inspired composers, lyricists, and music publishers in Southern and border states, and even in foreign countries, to support the new nation. Confederate-imprint sheet music articulated and encouraged Confederate nationalism, honored soldiers and military leaders, comforted family and friends, and provided diversion from the hardships of war. This is the first comprehensive history of the sheet music of the Confederacy. It covers works published before the war in Southern states that seceded from the Union, and those published during the war in Union occupied capitals, border and Northern states, and foreign countries. It is also the first work to examine the contribution of postwar Confederate-themed sheet music to the South's response to its defeat, to the creation and fostering of Lost Cause themes, and to the promotion of national reunion and reconciliation.

WHY EVERY PARENT & MUSIC TEACHER SHOULD USE THIS SONGBOOK! Learning to make music provides an excellent path to development in children. Plus it is joyful and fun. But learning has not always been easy. Traditional methods start with abstract symbols and concepts. The author began searching for a simpler, more intuitive way to teach music to his then three-year-old son. In his search, he began combining ideas from the worlds of design, early childhood education, film scoring and even storytelling. Thus, the Musicolor Method(R) was born. For over a decade, it has become a proven way to quickly and gently introduce real music making skills to preschoolers and beyond.

We call this series “I don’t read music” since we are targeting beginners of all ages: children, teens, parents, grandparents. Folk music traditionally is not learned from sheet music or notes. Instead, it is learned by repetition and from being passed from generation to generation. We believe in this method of teaching, which is easier and more enjoyable. This book includes 58 familiar and easy-to-play folk songs and melodies. Each song here is written with color circles and letter notes inside. All songs have been simplified and transposed for one octave. Since this book is aimed at the absolute beginner without any knowledge of reading music, we do not use here the classical music staff and do not show the note duration. You can experiment with the duration on your own. If you have very little music experience, playing by note can be difficult. It is easier to follow color-coded circles with note letters. By simply following the color circles, you will sound like an experienced musician. We use here the Boomwhackers® color system commonly used by American music teachers. Our simple method using circles as an aid allows the flexibility that existed in traditional ways of teaching. We recommend finding each of these songs on YouTube and listening to the rhythm before beginning to play. Our sheet music is only a guide. The most important thing is to listen and repeat what is heard in the recordings. Now you can master Bach’s most beautiful prelude—even if you’ve never sat down at a piano before! Do you have a piano (or keyboard) and forty-five spare minutes every day? Then spend the next six weeks with acclaimed concert pianist James Rhodes. By the end, you’ll be able to perform Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C major—no prior musical experience required! Rhodes reveals How to Play the Piano step by step—how to read the treble and bass clefs as well as sharp and flat notes, and then how to practice—before teaching the Prelude in easy, bite-size segments. His method is free of tedious drills, and filled with inspiration: “If listening to music is soothing for the soul, then playing music is achieving enlightenment.” Before you know it, not only will you have learned how to play one of Bach’s most beloved masterpieces—you also will have unleashed your creativity, exercising your mind (and fingers) and accomplishing something you never thought possible. Bravo! Includes four instructional videos supported by select e-reader devices.
