Every war has its "stories". This is my story about a Cold War conflict, when at the time I served, had no clear end in sight. This story doesn't have any dynamic Hollywood gunfights, and it isn't an action thriller. It's a story of "... watching and waiting...", more akin to a firehouse routine than some grandiose military action "blockbuster" movie.

Have you ever had questions about events in some ones life that affected you and you never ask? As we, Mariette and I were returning home from PA one evening and we had visited Barbara Bunting on the old farm, I ask Sis (that's what we call Mariette) "how did Dad find that farm". This 300 acre farm was in the middle of no where, about halfway between Springboro and Albion in rural PA. Sis, being the oldest of us 5 kids, surly would know about the move but she didn't. Another thing I had questions about was Mother and Dads meeting and their courtship in California where they were married. Again she had no idea. As you know, being young children, you were never interest in stuff like that and later you had your own group of friends and still not interested. Then you meet the love of your life and nothing else was important to you. Then kids, job and married life and time slips by and then you lose one parent and a short time later both are gone. They took all the life experiences and stories with them. I had questions for my Father and Mother that can never be answered by them so I have decided to write this book. Have my children ask me those questions, no. Do they want to sit and listen to me tell them my life's stories, no. Will they have questions when we are gone, most likely!

Perfectly blending a vast historical scope with intensely individual viewpoints, this stirring collection of stories brings a man-on-the-ground perspective to a huge range of military history, with stories of a quarter-century of war from nearly every corner of the earth, including Europe; the Pacific; mainland Asia; a tense confrontation in Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis; POW camps in Germany, Japan, and California; and the San Joaquin Valley home front from the 1940s through the 1960s. These 72 highly individualized narratives of combat, military service, and the personal sacrifices of war--penned by ordinary San Joaquin Valley residents and buttressed with more than 100 personal photographs--bring commentaries from soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, nurses, ambulance drivers, and civilians. “Musalaheen! Musalaheen!” The child cried twice before turning to run back inside. He peered at me from behind the doorjamb. I stood stunned for a moment, arm extended in front of me. I looked at the glove on my hand, blackened from sewage and dirt, torn apart by razor wire and rocks. I realized, if I were him, I wouldn’t shake my hand either. Musalaheen is the Arabic word for gunslinger. Jason Arment, serving as a Machine Gunner in the United States Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom, is both gunman and witness in this memoir. Musalaheen is a chronicle of boots on the ground in an occupied land and Arment unflinchingly offers the reader a window into their own complicity in genocidal empire building.
