DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Wakeman's Handbook of Irish Antiquities The year 1848, what may be styled a precursor of my present "Handbook of Irish Antiquities" was published. Since then a new impulse, leading to the study of Archaeology in this country, has, for various reasons, steadily prevailed. In the first place, our antiquarian writers, as a rule, no longer propounded the visionary theories of an older school. Secondly, publications like the Journal of the Kilkenny Society, the Ulster Journal of Archaeology, that of the Irish Archaeological Society, the Proceedings and other works emanating from the Royal Irish Academy, amongst which the Catalogue of Antiquities preserved in the Museum of that body, by the late Sir William Wilde, takes a foremost place, were well calculated to place students - particularly of Celtic archaeology - in the right way of investigation. But besides the Societies, not a few independent observers were individually at work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
