The World Association for Animal Production produces this book that is a reference tool for the animal scientific community and for policy makers worldwide. Sixty authors from the six continents contributed with thirty outstanding manuscripts. This volume is the first of a series that will be produced every year. The objective of this project is to establish a reference volume for livestock system and research development, for the use of international organizations, research institutes, policy makers and animal industries, worldwide. This book is particularly interesting for those wanting to get a deeper knowledge on the ""state of the art"" of livestock systems in the six continents. This aspect is illustrated in the first section of the volume, while the second section describes the development of research activities in nineteen specific fields of animal science. Furthermore, the readers will certainly be interested by reading the ""contemporary issues"" manuscripts belonging to the third section. The articles of this section were selected to accomplish the most ""urgent"" topics in animal industry. The volume is also completed with relevant statistics, furnishing information and data in a homogenous and easy to read structure. The changes that have happened in animal industries in the last decades are clearly illustrated in tables and graphics. These data, together with the interpretation of the articles of the previous sections, will render easier the prediction of future scenarios. The World Association for Animal Production produces this book that is a reference tool for the animal scientific community and for policy makers worldwide. Sixty authors from the six continents contributed with thirty outstanding manuscripts.

"In this third volume of the successful Book of the Year series, produced by the World Association for Animal Production (WAAP) specialists in animal science inform you about the developments in the past year in livestock systems worldwide. The best authors available are chosen to express their competence and expertise on all the aspects considered relevant in each specific field of animal science. This volume, like its predecessors, is based on four sections. The first describes livestock industry and relative research developments in the geographical continents. The second includes efforts to describe the development of research in every discipline within the large ambit of animal science. The third section contains interesting articles on 'free subjects', of large interest for readers such as 'Science and Policy in Risk Assessment of Transgenic Animals', 'The impact of nano-scale technologies in animal management', 'New developments in amino acid research', etc. The last section presents detailed statistics of high relevance in animal industry. This book is generally recognized as one of the very few practical resources of comprehensive statistical information related to animal industry. The Book of the Year series is intended for libraries that wish to offer their readers high-quality, updated information. At the same time, this series is an indispensable resource for scientists, policy makers and scientific writers who wish to enhance their proficiency in their field. It provides a very current, complete picture of the animal industry and livestock science worldwide."

Sustainable management of the world's livestock genetic diversity is of vital importance to agriculture, food production, rural development and the environment. "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture" is the first global assessment of these resources. Drawing on 169 Country Reports, contributions from a number of international organizations and 12 specially commissioned thematic studies, it presents an analysis of the state of agricultural biodiversity in the livestock sector - origins and development, uses and values, distribution and exchange, risk status and threats - and of capacity to manage these resources - institutions, policies and legal frameworks, structured breeding activities and conservation programmes. Needs and challenges are assessed in the context of the forces driving change in livestock production systems. Tools and methods to enhance the use and development of animal genetic resources are explored in sections on the state of the art in characterization, genetic improvement, economic evaluation and conservation. The main findings of the report are summarized in "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - in brief," of which the Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish versions can be found on the attached CD-ROM and are also available separately in printed form. As well providing a technical reference document, the country-based preparation of "The State of the World" has led to a process of policy development and a "Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources," which once adopted, will provide an agenda for action by the international community. Published also in French.

This title develops from the 24th Stadler symposium. It explores the general theme "GENOME EXPLOITATION: Data Mining the Genomes". The idea behind the theme is to discuss and illustrate how scientists are going to characterize and make use of the massive amount of information being accumulated about plant and animal genomes. The book presents a state-of-the-art picture on mining the Genome databases. Its chapters are authored by key stars in the field.

In Animals as Biotechnology sociologist Richard Twine places the question of human/animal relations at the heart of sustainability and climate change debates. The book is shaped by the emergence of two contradictory trends within our approach to nonhuman animals: the biotechnological turn in animal sciences, which aims to increase the efficiency and profitability of meat and dairy production; and the emerging field of critical animal studies - mostly in the humanities and social sciences - which works to question the nature of our relations with other animals. The first part of the book focuses on ethics, examining critically the dominant paradigms of bioethics and power relations between human and non-human. The second part considers animal biotechnology and political economy, examining commercialisation and regulation. The final part of the book centres on discussions of sustainability, limits and an examination of the prospects for animal ethics if biotechnology becomes part of the dominant agricultural paradigm. Twine concludes by considering whether growing calls to reduce our consumption of meat/dairy products in the face of climate change threats are in fact complicit with an anthropocentric understanding of sustainability and that what is needed is a more fundamental ethical and political questioning of relations and distinctions between humans, animals and nature.
