Nonprofit leadership is messy Nonprofits leaders are optimistic by nature. They believe with time, energy, smarts, strategy and sheer will, they can change the world. But as staff or board leader, you know nonprofits present unique challenges. Too many cooks, not enough money, an abundance of passion. It’s enough to make you feel overwhelmed and alone. The people you help need you to be successful. But there are so many obstacles: a micromanaging board that doesn’t understand its true role; insufficient fundraising and donors who make unreasonable demands; unclear and inconsistent messaging and marketing; a leader who’s a star in her sector but a difficult boss… And yet, many nonprofits do thrive. Joan Garry’s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership will show you how to do just that. Funny, honest, intensely actionable, and based on her decades of experience, this is the book Joan Garry wishes she had when she led GLAAD out of a financial crisis in 1997. Joan will teach you how to: Build a powerhouse board Create an impressive and sustainable fundraising program Become seen as a ‘workplace of choice’ Be a compelling public face of your nonprofit This book will renew your passion for your mission and organization, and help you make a bigger difference in the world.

In April 2005, two days after my 76th birthday, I became the Protestant Chaplain at California Correctional Center in Susanville, California. The warden hired me for the job of creating a Faith Based Rehabilitation Program, taught by inmates, supported by unpaid Outside Volunteers. It was anticipated that it could be a rehabilitation program for the twenty six State Prisons in California as well a challenge for the myriad jails and prisons throughout the United States. To overcome the warehousing model of incarcerating and housing inmate in prisons throughout most prison systems it is imperative that inexpensive programs be developed to counteract the chilling effect of sparse and ineffective free time support for the inmate population. California recidivism rates in state prisons exceed 80%. It is expected that is much the same across the United States. Something needs to be done to counteract this and the CCC model is one attempt to do it. Included in this book are anecdotal examples and testimonies which point to this possibility. The challenges or "barrels" related in this attempt to change the recidivism rate at one institution tell us it won't be easy. New ideas are hard to come by in prison, "the old and tried and failed" to often have the upper hand. As you follow my story you will see how and who are the advocates and foes of change in the way prisons are operated. The story told here can benefit the families of the more than 1,000,000 inmates in the prisons and jails in America. It can provide insights into the prison life for the students in the Correctional Curriculums in the colleges and universities of America. If the book were read by the personnel in the Administration of State Prisons they might be challenged to work to change the climate in their jails and prisons. Whether any of the above read it isn't as important as if you read it. Read it!!

There has never been a greater need for raising the funds necessary to promote the causes that will help build a sustainable future. In Money for the Cause: A Complete Guide to Event Fundraising, veteran nonprofit executive director Rudolph A. Rosen lays out field-tested approaches that have been among those that helped him and the teams of volunteers and professionals he has worked with raise more than $3 billion for environmental conservation. As Rosen explains, fundraising events can range from elite, black-tie affairs in large cities to basement banquets and backyard barbeques in small-town America. Money for the Cause runs the gamut, demonstrating methods adaptable to most situations and illustrating both basic and advanced techniques that can be duplicated by everyone from novice volunteers to experienced event planners. Each chapter begins with a pertinent, real-life anecdote and focuses on major areas of event fundraising: business plans and budgets, raffles and auctions, tax and liability matters, contract negotiation, games and prizes, site selection, food service, entertainment, publicity, mission promotion, food and drink service, and effective team building and use of volunteers. The author applies each topic to the widest possible range of events, providing practical detail and giving multiple examples to cover the differences in types of organizations and their fundraising activities. Whatever the funding objective may be, Money for the Cause: A Complete Guide to Event Fundraising is both a textbook and a practical reference that will be indispensable to anyone involved in mission-driven organizations, whether as a volunteer, a professional, a student, or an educator.
