Compiling decades of fieldwork, two acclaimed scholars offer strategies for strengthening democracies by nurturing the voices of children and encouraging public awareness of their role as citizens. Voice, Choice, and Action is the fruit of the extraordinary personal and professional partnership of a psychiatrist and a neurobiologist whose research and social activism have informed each other for the last thirty years. Inspired by the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Felton Earls and Mary Carlson embarked on a series of international studies that would recognize the voice of children. In Romania they witnessed the consequences of infant institutionalization under the Ceaușescu regime. In Brazil they encountered street children who had banded together to advocate effectively for themselves. In Chicago Earls explored the origins of prosocial and antisocial behavior with teenagers. Children all over the world demonstrated an unappreciated but powerful interest in the common good. On the basis of these experiences, Earls and Carlson mounted a rigorous field study in Moshi, Tanzania, which demonstrated that young citizens could change attitudes about HIV/AIDS and mobilize their communities to confront the epidemic. The program, outlined in this book, promoted children’s communicative and reasoning capacities, guiding their growth as deliberative citizens. The program’s success in reducing stigma and promoting universal testing for HIV exceeded all expectations. Here in vivid detail are the science, ethics, and everyday practice of fostering young citizens eager to confront diverse health and social challenges. At a moment when adults regularly profess dismay about our capacity for effective action, Voice, Choice, and Action offers inspiration and tools for participatory democracy.

Have you ever thought, I feel trapped, while in a relationship, home or work environment? While growing up, author Olivia Erinn often felt she was caught in a spider web; she experienced an abusive childhood and would later be involved in two abusive marriages. She came across the following facts about spiders and spider webs and found it quite similar to her feelings of entrapment. Spiders do not have teeth and do not chew their victims. Instead, they fill the bodies of their victims with poisonous juices which dissolve the victims insides. This is why you see the spiders victims laying in their webs. They are not saving them for later; they are in the process of dissolving their insides. Once the insides have been dissolved, the spider is then able to suck the victim as if it were water. The spiders web helps in this process. Once the victim is in the web, they cant get free. Spiders dont actually save their food for later; they just take a little while to prepare their meals. This is a great analogy of what an abuser or bully does with his or her victims. The abuseregardless of the form it takesis the abusers poison. Over time, the abuse weakens the victims self-esteem, and they eventually find themselves lying in the web, the life sucked right out of them. Once in the web, the victim finds it nearly impossible to get free of the abuser. In a sense, its a slow death to our physical, verbal, emotional, mental, sexual and spiritual beingsour very existence. But take heart; Olivia shares both her story and the necessary steps to discover and expose these kinds of individuals, known as narcissists. She provides the knowledge and ways to escape from these types of abusive relationships.

Exit, Voice, and Loyalty

Exit, Voice, and Loyalty

An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”

In the early 1980s synthetic 'human' insulin produced by recombinant DNA technology came onto the market. Despite an acknowledgment by the manufacturers regarding the potential dangers of 'human' insulin they soon began to withdraw bovine and porcine insulin from markets all over the world, and promoted more expensive 'human' insulins as a superior replacement. Diabetics had no option but to effectively switch to the new synthetic insulins and often they received little or no information about their potentially life-threatening side effects. In the first part of this book the author provides fundamental information about insulin therapy and its history. A detailed discussion of the hazards confronting some diabetic patients when using 'human' insulin follows. Due to more pronounced hypoglycemia symptoms animal insulin can be regarded as safer than 'human' insulin for 10-20% of diabetic patients. The last part of this publication looks at the pharmaceutical industry's decision to withdraw animal insulin from the market and describes the struggles of a new global movement to secure its continued availability. This book not only provides potentially vital background information for those who depend on insulin, but also deserves the attention of professionals who prescribe or distribute this medication. It can also serve as a reference for patient advocates, relevant government departments and pharmaceutical companies.
