This volume documents the Getty Museum's important holdings of Vincennes and Sèvres porcelain. Entries are arranged in chronological order and include descriptions, commentary, and a complete bibliography and exhibition list. Every object is illustrated in color and all incised and painted marks are reproduced. The volume also includes an index of painters, gilders, and previous owners.
J. Paul Getty had a passion for the exquisitely made furniture and decorative objects of eighteenth-century France, which he began collecting in the 1930s. Gillian Wilson, curator of decorative arts since 1971, has broadened and strengthened the collection, adding Boulle furniture, mounted oriental porcelain, tapestries, clocks, ceramics, and more. Porcelain imported from China was the most highly coveted new medium in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Europe. Its pure white color, translucency, and durability, as well as the delicacy of decoration, were impossible to achieve in European earthenware and stoneware.
