Excerpt from Episodes From an Unwritten History I was sufficiently interested in the leaflet to which I have referred, to attend one of the lectures it advertised, and gained my first view of the man who was to unlock a closed door of my consciousness. The subject of his lecture was The Law of Karma; there was nothing new in it for me, since the law of karma was to my thinking as much a part of the general scheme of things as the law of gravitation itself. The exposition was ade quate, but not eloquent, delivered in excellent English, in a wonderfully pleasant voice. The lecturer as'he progressed gave glimpses of a remarkable and charming personality, of great earnestness, refinement, spirituality, and intel lectual power. I have heard the comments of many persons who attended his lecture, upon whom he seems to have made the same deep impression, not so much by what he said - for to many that seemed nonsense - as by what he was. At the end, my curiosity being gratified, I went away counting it an evening not ill-spent, though far from lively, and dismissed the matter from my mind. Excerpt from The Unwritten History of the New Hampshire Historical Society Building I have been impressed since the dedication of the New Hampshire Historical Society Building that there still remained a historical residuum worthy to be noticed and remembered. By this I mean a chapter in our annals that has never been written. While the history of the Society, from its foundation nearly a century ago down to the opening of our beautiful building, has been written and preserved for all time, and the description of the building and its charms and richness similarly treated, there seemed to be wanting something to complete the narrative. And that something I denominate a historical residuum. In the objective point of view nothing perhaps has been left unwritten, but subjectively the fact is otherwise. Excerpt from Cheat Mountain, or Unwritten Chapter of the Late War The long silence of history, whatever may have been the cause, has induced the writer to make an effort to res cue from oblivion the heroic deeds and sufferings of those noble men. It may be true, however, that the real and true facts connected with this particular campaign or service have never been told, and hence the whole chapter, to call it such, is about to pass away unnoticed and unwritten. Excerpt from Our Father's House, or the Unwritten Word It is the highest attainment of human faith to believe that the Maker of all worlds is Our Father, and that this earth is but one of the many mansions in Our Father's House. It is the highest attainment of human philosophy to accept all the forms and forces of the physical world as revelations of God's Unwritten' Word. The author of this book has tried to walk humbly hand in hand with both Faith and Philosophy while surveying the wonders of God's works for the illustration of the deeper wonders of God's word. Craving the company of such as can be persuaded to go with him, he would wander from room to room in the great House which God has built, wondering all the way at the riches and splendors stored in every apartment, and accepting every gift of his Father's love with the simplicity and thankfulness of a little child. If my reader will consent to go with me in such a spirit, we shall together find it easy to draw lessons of heavenly wisdom from the most common objects of daily observation. We shall see God in the glory of infinite wisdom and love where faithless Science sees nothing but soulless law and purposeless phenomena. We shall gather eternal riches where the seekers after perishable gain find nothing but dust. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
