Notable progress in portland cement concrete technology has been recorded during the past 25 years. However, one related subject which has lagged relatively far behind concerns knowledge of the effect which portland cement exerts on the performance characteristics of concrete, particularly durability. Aware of the need for basic research in this area, the New York State Department of Public Works in 1959 authorized the Bureau of Physical Research to initiate a broad research program entitled, "Types of cement vs. durability of concrete." This report presents the work completed under Phase 2 of the program.
