For instant versatility in home decor, these five crochet designs by Kathryn Clark all feature reversible qualities that make them twice as nice. The effect is created when you alternate yarn colors on each row, resulting in the pattern emphasizing a different color on each side. For example, the Checkered Afghan in brown and off-white yarns looks checkered on both sides but appears predominantly brown on one side and predominantly off-white on the other. 5 designs: Fiery Plaid Afghan and Pillow; Checkered Afghan; Shades of Pink Baby Afghan; and Country Diamonds Rug. The rug is crocheted using bulky yarn; all other designs use medium weight yarn. Twice As Nice Decor (Leisure Arts #4593)

To nine-year-old Willie Powell, there was no prettier sight than the smooth grass lawns of Edgewater Golf Cource. He had been so eager to see them that he'd run seven miles to where the course was situated outside of town. But his elation didn't last. When he asked two golfers if they'd teach him the game, one man responded by saying, 'Son, didn't anyone ever tell you that your kind is not welcome here?' In the 1920's there was no place for Willie, or any black person, on a golf cource. It was a game for white people only, at least in America. But his enthusiasm for golf and his belief in what he knew to be right drove Willie Powell to change that, and to change minds.

Wildly original novelist, essayist, and performance artist Jonathan Ames delivers a hilarious, risqué, and loveable selection of articles, essays, and fiction, including several previously unpublished pieces. In The Double Life Is Twice as Good, fans will be treated to a deft and charming compilation of Ames’s journalism, personal essays, and short fiction. Featuring illuminating profiles of Marilyn Manson and Lenny Kravitz, his adventures at a goth festival in the Midwest, a story written for Esquire on a napkin, as well as a comic strip collaboration with graphic artist Nick Bertozzi, Ames’s unique style and personality-driven humor shines throughout this wickedly funny collection. Also included is the short story, “Bored to Death,” a Raymond Chandler–esque tale about a struggling writer-turned-detective who becomes quickly embroiled in the search for a missing college co-ed, which inspired the HBO series of the same name. Described by The Portland Oregonian as “an edgier David Sedaris,” Ames will have you hooked with this brilliant collection.

Reviews Make the Clouds Cry In Make the Clouds Cry, author Jesse E. Corralez revives his animated characterization of Satan, but with a twist that focuses more on the behaviors of humans as opposed to Lucifer's influence over mankind. Human beings are held responsible for the chaos and pain they bring on themselves. Corralez covers morality and accountability issues in this story. Humans are challenged by Satan to look at the trouble they cause and to accept that the power to change the behavior lies in their own hands. It's interesting to hear this coming from the foul mouthed, always joking Lucifer, but it is an effective message. Make the Clouds Cry is an entertaining tale that offers suspense and moral conflict while encouraging introspection. South of Baton Rouge It is 1846 and twenty years old Clement Augustus Hope, professional gambler and former pirate, has won the deed to a plantation outside of New Orleans. The win marks the beginning of a new life for Hope and a complete transformation of the man he once was. South of Baton Rouge is a stunning work of historical fiction that burrows deep below the surface of a man's character to reveal the truth that resides in his heart. Corralez, the author of several novels, has once again created characters that require readers to stretch their perceptions about a person's background and his ability to change. The atmosphere of community and family that exists on the Hope Plantation represents unconditional love as it should exist. The residents worked, played, loved, fought and died as a unit demonstrating an intense loyalty that is hard to find in homogeneous communities. The author's penchant for detail brings the action in this story to life. His understanding of the depth of human character and all of its layers make the characters real and painful to lose when the purity of Hope Plantation is destroyed. South of Baton Rouge is a fantastic story rife with lessons that easily translate to modern times. I highly recommend it.
