Excerpt from Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, Eleventh of November, Memorial Meeting: Souvenir Edition of the Famous Speeches of Our Martyrs, Delivered in Court When Asked if They Had Anything to Say Why Sentence of Death Should Not Be Passed on Them, October 7, 8, and 9, 1886; November 11, 1887-1912 Within the pages of this book, in other and appropriate places, will be found the words that tell the life stories of these men. These are but the forewords of introduction to the stories of these men, and else where within the pages oi this volume will be found, from many who esteemed them aright, words of deep and loyal appreciation, and words of the victims themselves that will, with the cooling of the years and the abatement of the feelings of fear and resentment of those old passions of a quarter of a century ago, help to a gentler and more considerate judgment than was, seemingly, possible in the blind riot of the passions of the hour. That something having at least the semblance of justice may now be done to these men, who with high and undaunted courage mounted the steps of the scaffold with words of high and beautiful submission to the judgment to which they bowed, I have written these words.
