Excerpt from Twelfth Biennial Report of the State Board of Health of Maryland, for the Two Years Ending December 31st, 1897 The Board has made strenuous efforts against the prevalence of typhoid fever in our midst, but finds itself hampered by lack of suitable laws and want of co-operation by the local authorities. We desire further legislation to perfect a system of sanitation that may be adapted to the cities, towns and rural districts of the State. We believe that the usefulness of the Board to the people of the State will be very materially advanced by adding to our equipment a bacteriological department, to be placed in charge of the Secretary of the Board.
