Trixie Triphammer's Magical Christmas: the plot Alone in her bedroom at night while her parents were Christmas shopping, little Laura Brown had a strange visitor: a female midget in a St. Louis Cardinal baseball uniform who entered her locked window without breaking the glass. She introduced herself as Trixie Triphammer and said she was here to enlist Laura's aid in saving all the turkeys from the ovens of Noddington, the little town where Laura lived. By a robust swing of her tiny bat Trixie was able to draw the frozen turkeys from freezers throughout the houses and stores of the village and send them flying--with their feathers and heads now intact-- to their homes on the farms. Laura and her golden retriever Goldilocks watched in awe, but were a upset when Trixie also confiscated all the Santa Claus suits, leaving their owners shivering in their boots and shorts on the village streets. Trixie wanted to get rid of the commercial aspects of Christmas, but the merchants of the town did not like losing business and, after capturing Trixie's magical bat, the police arrested her and charged her with robbing turkeys and as well as cut Christmas trees, whose roots she had restored before sending them back to their homes up north. What happens to Trixie when she is brought to the courtroom in a cat box is the climax of this delightful tale for children of all ages from nine to ninety.

The stories in this collection are rich with eccentric, comical characters and unpredictable plots. In The Dancing Lady of Pleasant Valley, uptight neighbors in a wealthy suburb are shocked to find a beautiful woman clad only in a flimsy nightgown, dancing and singing under their windows after midnight. In Two Handfuls of Aardvark Dung, a hapless husband and wife are rescued from suicide by Noah who agrees to lessen their financial difficulties by giving them ancient droppings from the animals on his ark, which they can sell on eBay. Anyone who hates going to the dentist will relate to Giving Up the Ghost, which is about a haunted barber chair, and music lovers will no doubt be intrigued by the Mouse Who Liked Mozart. In The Cemetery Lady, The Bridge and Brandon McCarthy: Book Lover, the main characters struggle with loneliness, loss, and confusion. Most of these stories are told in the first person, drawing the reader into an intriguing intimacy with the narrators, making it easy to suspend ones disbelief and provide companionship for those long sleepless nights.

Acclaimed for her 1928 novel A Lantern in Her Hand, Bess Streeter Aldrich became one of the most widely read interpreters of the prairie pioneer experience. In 1935, she published her masterpiece, Spring Came on Forever, a novel of two Nebraska pioneer families from settlement to the 1930s. Elsewhere an artist of the romance, here Aldrich turns romance on its head. The heroine is Amalia Holmsdorfer, one of a band of German immigrants who settle on the prairie. From her late teens to her mid-eighties she confronts and defeats the forces of nature and society that discourage or ruin others. Her life might be a modest triumph but for one detail: she married the wrong man. Quickly paced and precisely drawn, this novel is Aldrich's greatest tribute to the complexity, humor, endurance, and intelligence of the people who settled the prairie. Whatever its sentiments, it has as many cutting edges as a buzz saw.

Five-year-old James Merritt lies in a hospital bed--the sixth victim in a series of accidents plaguing a peaceful Connecticut community. In his wildest imagining, he has never dreamed death would come in such a tiny, innocent way.' Cinnie Merritt holds her son's limp and weightless hand, trying to explain away the injuries that don't add up, the strange medical reactions, the nonsense words he keeps repeating, the shattering sense of foreboding. Something is wrong. Something is very, very wrong. 'Please let my baby be all right. Please let him wake up and be fine.' At night, a stalking figure makes its silent way into the hospital room. 'You belong to me now, child of my salvation. Wellspring of health and healing. Sweet servant of the dark moon. From the dark corner of a mother's world nightmare . . ."Someone's Watching."
