The narrator's father, a nobleman from Burgundy, moved to Edinburgh with the exiled monarch and then traveled with him to various places, including Italy, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and the Holy Land, before returning to Italy and placing the narrator in the Propaganda for his education. The narrator's father subsequently met an old friend, an Italian prince named Seravalle, who had also been imprisoned for his involvement in a conspiracy to restore Italy to its former glory. Seravalle remained committed to the cause of Italy's regeneration after his release from prison and became a leader of the Carbonari, a sect known for the constancy and sufferings of its members.
