Pandora is a true beauty who is engaged to be married to Esau, but at a bachelorette party, she meets Perry and sparks fly. Perry is a handsome and dynamic journalist at the city newspaper in Yaounde, Cameroon. Esau’s troubles begin when Pandora returns home late from the party that is emceed by Perry. The two share a taxi, and Perry opts to escort Pandora home. A relationship starts to build between them and they meet a few times. Due to problems with the wedding venue and the uncle of the bridegroom’s illness, the wedding is postponed. This allows time for Pandora and Perry to see more of each other. Two of Esau’s “friends” inform him of his fiancée’s philandering and promise to “take care” of Perry. The New European Automobile Industry is about the struggle for survival going on among the assembler and components firms which constitute the European automobile industry. It describes and explains the competitive, structural, organisational and technological changes currently sweeping the industry and outlines the spatial and economic effects of those changes. The empirical core of the book is a study of a number of technology fields in automobile components. These sections draw on the latest research carried out by the authors in Europe through which they evaluate the extent to which lean production techniques have permeated the vehicle assemblers and components industry.

Car manufacturing involves the movement of large numbers of heavy, awkward objects incorporating some 20,000 parts, through a large number of short cycles. As to be expected the constant flow of the processes involved is disrupted by both the inherent complexities of production and those of market restrictions. This study, a unique blend of analysis, history and case studies, not only characterizes the essence of car manufacturing but also explains the links between production, market conditions and financial results and constraints. At the same time, it challenges fashionable views on the car industry and rejects the current preference for facile dichotomies (e.g. mass production vs. lean production; Japan vs. America; freedom vs. regulation). However, it also shows that the failure of BMC, the largest failure in the industry to date, cannot be attributed to its incomplete adoption of the best system. Ford and Toyota were exceptionally successful in their production organization but their solutions had more in common than is generally acknowledged, and those solutions also required exceptional market conditions for their successful implementation.
