A rapid exchange of information between European research institutes greatly enhances the national effectiveness of individual programmes to the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Used extensively in North America and Europe, seminal practice networks, also referred to as practice research networks, recruit office-based physicians to monitor defined events among their patients, such as influenza, mumps and asthma attacks, at regional, county and even national levels. After adequate analysis, these data indicate spatial and temporal trends in event frequencies: comparibility of national results is, however, limited, partly due to the different national health systems influencing the demand of medical care. More importantly, the lack of comparable data on the population from which the cases arise - denominator data - obstructs the comparison of data from primary care research between different regions or countries.
EUCAMBIS was established under BIOMED I in 1994 as an interdisciplinary consortium aiming to advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of ageing of immunosenescence. The project sought to draw together scientists and clinicians from diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology, cell and tumour biology, geriatrics, endocrinology and transplantation biology in order to investigate the impact of ageing on immune responses. The papers collected in this volume illustrate the diversity of the work carried out by the members of EUCAMBIS during its three-and-a-half year existence. This introductory chapter attempts to summarize the results of some of the EUCAMBIS collaborations, with emphasis on the "workshop" approach which was aimed at analysing the expression of "growth arrest" genes in ageing human T lymphocytes.
One of the goals for the proposed book is to bring together leading experts in the world working in multidisciplinary areas including epidemiology, biomechanics, experimental and analytical research, physical modeling, and clinical aspects of whiplash injury. The objective of the EURO-QUAL programme has been to improve the quality of care for the individual patient. At the same time the need for harmonisation of health care in Europe was recognised. This Quality Improvement System (QIS) for orthodontic care in Europe comprises of 'Guidelines for how to implement a QIS' and reference material from the project teams: Financial Resources, Professional Development, Consumer Satisfaction, and Industrial Co-operation. In this respect the following topics are discussed: * The differences and similarities in local (national) quality initiatives. * The use of databases, as a technique to improve quality by comparing one's own performance against that of colleagues. * The influence of the different national systems of funding on both the amount of care provided as well as the quality of care. * The contents and the quality of the educational programmes, at all levels of orthodontic care. * Promotion of patients' rights and responsibilities before, during and after the orthodontic treatment. * A common goal and common language with the industrial partners by which the interaction can be optimised and communication will be enriched. This book provides the background information for the appropriate use of the European Orthodontic Quality Manual (EOQM). Strategies for the implementation of a QIS in orthodontics, taking into account the complex of the outlined aspects, make this book interesting for the orthodontic professional as well as the stakeholders (education, funding, industry, and consumers) in orthodontic care.

Human aging is perhaps the most complex and important subject that will be facing science and societies in the next century. Persons seem to be living longer and remaining more active than their parents and grandparents. This is leading to social and demographic shifts that must be accommodated by society. On the other hand it presents perplexing questions about the underlying processes and determinants of healthy aging. This book gives a design for research that will increase our understanding of the factors that influence healthy aging and can lead to improvements in reducing the levels of disability in the population. It's focus is on biobehavioural and psychological factors contributing to healthy aging. Since human aging is determined by many interacting conditions inside and outside of the organism, research should concentrate on ecological relationships between the human organism and its social and physical environment. Not only individual characteristics associated with aging are discussed in this book, but also their impacts on society. Living longer means most persons will have fewer years to earn money to maintain their lives in a longer retirement. How can these two forces be resolved through public policy? At the same time greater competence in the later years needs clues to ways of releasing this productivity for the benefit of society and individuals. Adding healthy life expectancy and creating as much as possible disability-free years is a goal that can only be reached through fact finding by a multidisciplinary team of scientist collaborating on an international basis. Implementing a QIS will influence the provision of orthodontic care by: * Demonstrating the potentials for development of the organisational elements of orthodontics. * Planning and integrating systematic activities to monitor and improve treatment at the practice level and the patient-related level. Orthodontic treatment process is the central element in this manual. The route taken by an individual patient is described step by step. * Flowcharts describe the orthodontic treatment of the individual patient step by step. * Guidelines indicate what the professional should do at the various steps in order to follow the generally accepted objectives of orthodontics as described in the policy statements. * Indicators are tools to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment. The indicators provide the professional with facts about own performance. The EOQM, provides the orthodontic professional with a model for incorporating quality improvement into daily practice, which is based on European orthodontic consensus and current principles of quality in health care.
