Celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Venetian painter, draftsman, and printmaker Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), this volume brings together the paintings, drawings, and prints of Giambattista and his two sons, Domenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo that are preserved in Dutch collections -- including the rich holdings of the Rijksmuseum and the Institut Neerlandais in Paris. Professor Jaynie Anderson is an internationally recognised scholar, renowned for her research and publications on the Italian masters. On this occasion she has concentrated on one painting, the National Gallery of Victorias famous Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra by Giambattista Tiepolo. This glorious work of art, considered a centre-piece of the collection has recently undergone restoration in preparation for the re-opening of the National Gallery on St. Kilda Road in December 2003. This lavish catalogue presents 150 European paintings, pastels, and drawings from the late fifteenth to the mid-nineteenth century that have been given to the Metropolitan Museum by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman or are still held in Mrs. Wrightsman's private collection. These notable works were collected over the past four decades, many of them with the Museum in mind; some were purchased by the Museum through the Wrightsman Fund. Highlights of the book include masterpieces by Vermeer, El Greco, Rubens, Van Dyck, Georges de La Tour, Jacques-Louis David, and Caspar David Friedrich as well as numerous paintings by the eighteenth-century Venetian artists Canaletto, Guardi, and the Tiepolos, father and son, plus a dozen remarkable portrait drawings by Ingres. Each work is reproduced in color and is accompanied by a short essay.
