These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Three Plays: Look inside the book: Well, sir, if you think of all those illusions that mean nothing to you now, of all those things which don't even seem to you to exist any more, while once they were for you, don't you feel that—I won't say these boards—but the very earth under your feet is sinking away from you when you reflect that in the same way this you as you feel it today—all this present reality of yours—is fated to seem a mere illusion to you tomorrow? ...Imagine such a misfortune for characters as I have described to you: to be born of an author's fantasy, and be denied life by him; and then answer me if these characters left alive, and yet without life, weren't right in doing what they did do and are doing now, after they have attempted everything in their power to persuade him to give them their stage life. About Luigi Pirandello, the Author: The first years of matrimony brought on in him a new fervour for his studies and writings: his encounters with his friends and the discussions on art continued, more vivacious and stimulating than ever, while his family life, despite the complete incomprehension of his wife with respect to the artistic vocation of her husband, proceeded relatively tranquilly with the birth of two sons (Stefano and Fausto) and a daughter (Lietta). ...In 1919 Pirandello was left with no alternative but to have his wife placed in an asylum. The separation from his wife, toward whom, despite the morbid jealousies and hallucinations, he continued to feel a very strong attraction, caused great suffering for Pirandello who, even as late as 1924, believed he could still properly care for her at home.

"The three plays in this volume are considered his masterpieces and they are seen constantly on the stages of the world. 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' deals with a family of six who show up at a theater rehearsal asking that someone validate them by utilizing their lives in a play. 'Right You Are (If You Think So)' is about the morbid curiosity of a town's population to discover the "truth" about the Ponza family, a task they find to be frustratingly impossible. 'Henry IV' concerns the nature of reality and delusion in the mind of a man who may be a king, but then again, maybe not. Pirandello is as current and topical today as he was when he wrote, and almost every theater innovation in play-writing that has come after him owes its existence to his vision of the impossibility of knowing anything for certain."-- from publisher's description.

This special one-volume edition features five great plays by one of the most celebrated and fascinating dramatists of the twentieth century. Pirandello, awarded the Nobel Prize in 1934, was the playwright par excellence of the conflict between illusion and reality. His modern and sensationally original plays dramatize with force and eloquence the isolation of the individual from society and from himself. The editor, Eric Bentley, is an international theater authority. In addition to the Introduction and the biographical and bibliographical material in the Appendices, Mr. Bentley has prepared for this volume the first English translations of the play Liolà and Pirandello’s important “Preface” to Six Characters in Search of an Author. Included Plays: Liolà It Is So! (If You Think So) Henry IV Six Characters in Search of an Author Each in His Own Way
