Dr. Thornton traveled extensively on a study tour in Europe before briefly practicing medicine in Philadelphia (1786-1790) where he met and married Anna Maria Brodeau. His descendants can now be found across the United States, including Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois and Florida. Originally from Yorkshire, England the name Thornton means ""thorn hill.""

The bulk of the collection is related to Earle Clark Thornton's service in World War I. The personal correspondence includes letters and postcards from Earle Clark Thornton to his daughter, Dorothy. The official papers include personnel documents, certificates, special orders, and other documents regarding Earle Clark Thornton's service in World War I. The collection contains three diaries: a transcription of a diary kept by Samuel Watson Thornton from April to September 1898 and two diaries kept by Earle Clark Thornton in 1918 and 1919 describing his voyage overseas, his arrival in France, a scarlet fever quarantine, the Battle of Verdun, and his voyage back to the U.S. after the war. The printed materials include a hymn book for the Army and Navy annotated by Samuel Watson Thornton on 4 July 1864 and a business card from his time as commander of the Matt Starr Post No. 378. Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) in Jacksonville, Illinois. The photographs in the collection include portraits of Samuel Watson Thornton and Earle Clark Thornton, as well as photos taken in Texas during Earle Clark Thornton's service in World War I.
