Besides six single cells on the lower floor, there are three double cells and a secure and comfortable room for the safe-keeping of insane persons on the second floor. These have been constructed on the same plan as that adopted in our neighboring cities. All the teams employed in the repair of highways, and the two horses belonging to the fire department, are kept in the stable at the almshouse, and they show Mr. Spear's careful attention. The horses belonging to the fire department are kept at work on the highways within a Short distance of the steam fire engine, so as to be ready at all times for duty. To have been necessarily incurred, a large amount of the excess being for heating apparatus, removing steam apparatus and substituting hot-air furnaces, a change, in our Opinion, not too soon made. The cost of painting the schoolhouses has been no inconsiderable bill. The price paid for coal has also been higher than was anticipated. The amount of has been paid on account of Hyde Park School building, for which no appropriation was made by the town. The schoolhouse on Commercial Street was offered at auction, but no satisfactory bid being made it was not sold.
