DOWNLOAD EBOOKBiblical scholars have often contrasted the exegesis of the early church fathers from the eastern region and school of Syrian Antioch against that of the school of Alexandria. The Antiochenes have often been described as strictly historical-literal exegetes in contrast to the allegorical exegesis of the Alexandrians. Patristic scholars now challenge those stereotypes, some even arguing that few differences existed between the two groups. This work agrees that both schools were concerned with a literal and spiritual reading. But, it also tries to show, through analysis of Theodore and Theodorets exegesis and use of the term theria, that how they integrated the literal-theological readings often remained quite distinct from the Alexandrians. For the Antiochenes, the term theria did not mean allegory, but instead stood for a range of perceptionsprophetic, christological, and contemporary. It is in these insights that we find the deep wisdom to help modern readers interpret Scripture theologically.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWhile St. John Chrysostom may have commented on all 150 psalms in the Psalter, commentary has survived on only fifty-eight. In these volumes, Robert Charles Hill has prepared an excellent translation of the commentary - in Volume One Psalms 4-13, 44-50, and in Volume Two Psalms 109-150 (with the exception of the long Ps 119) - all appearing for the first time in English. In this work, probably composed while he was still in Antioch, Chrysostom's brilliance as an exegete of the "literal school" of Antioch shines forth, even as he works with the metaphorical language and imagery of the psalms. As Hill writes, "it is fascinating to watch Chrysostom . . . coming to grips with this lyrical material, achieving some sense of comfort, and eventually devising - for the first time? - his own hermeneutical principles for coping with such texts." The extensive Introduction in Volume One covers basic issues on the commentary, including its origins, its relationship to Chrysostom's other exegetical work, his attitude to Scripture, and the theology, spirituality and other moral accents of the commentary. Comment on Chrysostom's text is also given in endnotes, and indexes are provided in each volume. -- ‡c From publisher's description

DOWNLOAD EBOOKTheodoret of Cyrus on Romans 11:26: Recovering an Early Christian Elijah Redivivus Tradition explores the interesting reading of Romans 11:26 offered by the fifth-century Antiochene bishop Theodoret of Cyrus, who states that «the Jews will believe when the excellent Elijah comes, bringing to them the doctrine of faith.» Surveying the diverse Elijah redivivus traditions of Middle Judaism and early Christianity, the author identifies the two main trajectories of Christian Elijah redivivus traditions that emerge. Theodoret's application of one such tradition to Romans 11:26 is set within the framework of the modern debate on the salvation of Israel, allowing an ancient voice to speak to the modern scholarly divide.
