DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe definitive short biography of Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98), the founding father of Irish republicanism Originally published in 1981 as part of the groundbreaking Gill's Irish Lives series, Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98), A Life remains the most concise, accessible and authoritative introduction to one of Irish history's most seminal figures. Theobald Wolfe Tone, founder of the United Irishmen, revolutionary philosopher, nationalist martyr and, above all, legend of Irish history. For generations of Irish nationalists, from Robert Emmet to Patrick Pearse, Theobald Wolfe Tone defined republicanism, advocating honour, armed insurrection and martyrdom. Charismatic, intelligent and romantic, Tone's radical politics, his leadership of the 1798 Revolution and his tragic suicide while on trial for treason have become iconic in Irish history. Boylan's insightful and highly readable biography Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98), A Life introduces the man behind the legend, looking at his political ideas, his personal life and his public actions. Beginning with his upbringing and early life among the Protestant elite, Boylan goes on to consider his formidable involvement in Irish radical politics. He looks at Tone as both an Irish and a European revolutionary in a time so tumultuous it has become known as the Age of Revolutions. He then considers his fated role in the 1798 Uprising, climaxing with his subsequent iconic suicide. Boylan acknowledges Tone's personal failings and shortcomings but argues that his gaiety, courage and lack of fanaticism are what has ensured the endurance of his political and cultural legacy to the present day. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis edition of the writings of Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763-98), barrister, United Irishman, agent of the Catholic Committee and later an officer in the French revolutionary army, is intended to comprehend all his writings and largely to supersede the two-volume Life of Theobald Wolfe Tone ... written by himself that was edited by his son, William, and published at Washington in 1826. It consists mainly of Tone's correspondence, diaries, autobiography, pamphlets, public addresses and miscellaneous memoranda (both personal and public); it is based on the original MSS if extant or on the most reliable printed sources. Tone's participation in Irish politics in the early 1790s and his presence on the periphery of the ruling circle in revolutionary France from February 1796 to September 1798 would be sufficient to make his writings a major historical source. The literary quality of his letters, diaries and autobiography enhances their importance. The unique quality of Tone's writings isthat they are the production of a gifted and convivial young Irishman who moved widely in intellectual and political circles. This volume _ Tone's career in Ireland to June 1975 _ is the first of three. It is to be followed shortly by volumes II _ ('America, France and Bantry Bay, August 1795 to December 1796') and III ('France, the Rhine, Lough Swilly and death of Tone, January 1797 to November 1798'). A bibliography of Theobald Wolfe Tone and index to all three volumes are to appear in volume III.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn his brilliant second novel, Dermot McEvoy sweeps his readers into the midst of one of the most heated political races in New York City history, where an unlikely player decides to make her presence known. First it hits the papers that the Virgin Mary has appeared to Jackie Swift, an affable G.O.P. congressman with a couple of nasty habits. She then appears in a dream to Wolfe Tone O’Rourke, a liberal political consultant who is still haunted by the ghost of Bobby Kennedy, whose death he feels responsible for.Swift uses the Virgin, soon styled “Our Lady of Greenwich Village,” to put a strong anti-abortion spin on his current run for office, which immediately polarizes Greenwich Village. O’Rourke, beset by his many demons, sees something familiar in the Virgin’s dancing eyes and the line of her smile and decides to run against Swift with the campaign slogan “NO MORE BULLSHIT.” With help from unlikely characters like Cyclops Reilly, a one-eyed newspaper columnist for the Daily News, and Simone “Sam” McGuire, O’Rourke’s pretty, no-nonsense assistant, Tone is sent on a transcontinental journey that forces him to confront his own ghosts and dig deep into his family history, all to answer one burning question: What does Our Lady of Greenwich Village really want him to do?
