Excerpt from The Works of the Reverend William Law, Vol. 9 of 9 The 'three Letters to a Lady inclined to enter the Romish Communion' are now for the first time included in the Rev. W. Law's works. They were written during the years 1731-2 but there is some uncertainty respecting the identity of the person to whom they were originally addressed, which is however a matter of only slight consequence. For the appearance of these letters in this republication Readers are indebted to the Rev. F. Sanders, Vicar of Hoylake, who kindly lent his copy for this purpose; and whose remark respecting william law's works - that he knew of no author so likely to do good in this restless and impatient age - is well worthy of repetition here. During the progress of this work through the Press, further writings by the Rev. William law have been discovered; which, together with his other correspondence and various matters of interest in connection therewith will - with an Index or Summary to his complete works - be issued in a volume of Miscellanies, of which due notice will be given. The Collected Critical Writings gathers more than forty years of Hill's published criticism, in a revised final form, and also adds much new work. It will serve as the canonical volume of criticism by Hill, the pre-eminent poet-critic whom A. N. Wilson has called "probably the best writer alive, in verse or in prose." In his criticism Hill ranges widely, investigating both poets (including Jonson, Dryden, Hopkins, Whitman, Eliot, and Yeats ) and prose writers (such as Tyndale, Clarendon, Hobbes, Burton, Emerson, and F. H. Bradley). He is also steeped in the historical context - political, poetic, and religious - of the writers he studies. Most importantly, he brings texts and contexts into new and telling relations, neither reducing texts to the circumstances of their utterance nor imagining that they can float free of them. A number of the essays have already established themselves as essential reading on particular subjects, such as his analysis of Vaughan's "The Night", his discussion of Gurney's poetry, and his critical account of The Oxford English Dictionary. Others confront the problems of language and the nature of value directly, as in "Our Word is Our Bond", "Language, Suffering, and Value", and "Poetry and Value". In all his criticism, Hill reveals literature to be an essential arena of civic intelligence.

The Development of Anglican Moral Theology is the successor volume to The Origins of Anglican Moral Theology. It describes how Anglican theologians interacted closely with the moral philosophers of their day while providing a pastoral resource in the fast-changing period between 1680-1950. The book shows how vibrant and intellectually rigorous the tradition was, and includes detailed studies of the sermons of Butler, Wesley and Newman, the writings of William Law and Coleridge, and the later work of Maurice, Gore, Scott Holland, Moberly, William Temple and Kirk. This is the first account of this lively tradition of moral theology.

Excerpt from The Works of the Reverend William Law, Vol. 7 of 9 Difference, because he receives and uses them both in the same Spirit; Life and Death are equally welcome, because equally Parts of his Way to Eternity. For poor and miserable as this Life is, we have all of us free Access to all that is Great, and Good, and Happy, and carry within ourselves a Key to all the Treasures that Heaven has to bestow upon us.-we starve in the midst of Plenty, groan under Infirmities, with the Remedy in our own Hand; live and die without knowing and feeling any Thing of the Ofle, only Gooo', whilst we have it in our Power to know and enjoy it in as great a Reality, as we know and feel the Power of this World over us For Heaven is as near to our Souls, as this World is to our Bodies; and we are created, we are redeemed, to have our Conversation in it. God, the only Gaoa' of all intelligent Natures, is not an absent or distant God, but is more present in and to our Souls, than our own Bodies; and we are Strangers to Heaven, and without God in the World, for this only Reason, because we are void of that Spirit of Prayer, which alone can, and never fails to unite us with the One, only Good, and to open Heaven and the Kingdom of God within us. A Root set in the finest Soil, in the best Climate, and blessed with all that Sun, and Air, and Rain can do for it, is not in so sure a Way of its Growth to Perfection, as every Man may be, whose Spirit aspires after all that, which God is ready and infinitely desirous to give him. For the Sim meets not the springing Bud that stretches towards him with half that Certainty, as God, the Source of all Good, communicates him self to the Soul that longs to partake of Him. William Law emphasizes “the truth of our dependence upon the continual leading of the Spirit, and the assurance that that leading can be enjoyed without interruption.” Although a generally modernized version of Andrew Murray’s 1896 edition, Dave Hunt weaves together appropriate thoughts from Law’s major works, enriching the book for today’s reader.
