Newman himself called the Oxford University Sermons, first published in 1843, `the best, not the most perfect, book I have done'. He added, `I mean there is more to develop in it'. Indeed, the book is a precursor of all his major later works, including especially the Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine and the Grammar of Assent. Dealing with the relationship of faith and reason, the fifteen sermons represent Newman's resolution of the conflict between heart and head that so troubled believers, non-believers, and agnostics of the nineteenth century, Their controversial nature also makes them one of the primary documents of the Oxford Movement. This new edition provides an introduction to the sermons, a definitive text with textual variants, extensive annotation, and appendices containing previously unpublished material.

St. John Henry Newman was an influential churchman and man of letters, who led the Oxford movement and later became a cardinal deacon in the Roman Catholic Church. His eloquent prose style helped revive emphasis on the dogmatic authority of the church and urged reforms of the Church of England after the pattern of the original Catholic Church. A prolific author of many genres, Newman’s major works include the celebrated ‘Tracts for the Times’, his autobiography ‘Apologia pro vita sua’, religious novels and the poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’, which was set to music by Edward Elgar. This eBook presents Newman’s complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. This volume supplements "The Quotable Newman" (Sophia Institute Press, 2012), with 136 new topics and an overlap of 39 topics. Volume II is a bit more wide-ranging and perhaps also more "fun" (in a sense) for Newman devotees. Examples of the latter aspect might include Cardinal Newman's reflections upon his own writing and books, science and Christianity, heaven and hell, and old age. The citations also tend to be relatively shorter, and to include proportionately more material from his correspondence. I found two additional volumes of "Letters and Diaries" (volumes 27 and 28): covering the years of 1874-1878. They contain a lot of excellent observations and "gems" on a variety of topics, that I was delighted to find and now to pass along, for the education and edification of the reader. Once again, theology is the overwhelming emphasis. Anyone interested in Cardinal Newman's Catholic (or Anglican) doctrinal thinking and beliefs will, I trust, enjoy and learn from what I have compiled.
