Women's news and opinions often appeared anonymously in abolitionist journals and other reform newspapers even before Wisconsin became a state in 1848. The first state newspaper published under a woman's name was boycotted and failed in 1853. But from the passage of the 14th amendment in 1866 to Wisconsin's ratification of the 19th amendment in 1919, women were never at a loss for words or a newspaper to print them.
