DOWNLOAD EBOOKAdultery, intrigue, murder, revenge: the densely-packed plot of The White Devil touches on topics that are representative of the atmosphere of Jacobean tragedy. Part tragedy, part satire of a corrupt political world, the play explores the relations of the powerful to the disempowered; the opportunities and constraints of women trying to survive in a male-dominated society; the complex distribution of social hierarchy by birth, wealth, gender, race; and the way the skills licensed by the theatre itself – including disguise and both the performance and interpretation of character – become crucial survival skills, in a world of hidden motives and concealed intentions. Now comprehensively re-edited, with an introduction that addresses issues of performance, cultural and historical context, and interpretation, exploring the dark energy that has impelled audiences and scholars to return to this play again and again across four centuries. Arden Early Modern Drama editions offer the best in contemporary scholarship, providing a wealth of helpful and incisive commentary and guiding the reader to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the play. This edition provides: A clear and authoritative text Detailed on-page commentary notes A comprehensive, illustrated introduction to the play's historical, cultural and performance contexts A bibliography of references and further reading ARDEN EARLY MODERN DRAMA General Editors: Suzanne Gossett, John Jowett and Gordon McMullan Visit the Arden website at www.ardenshakespeare.com

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The White Devil and the Duchess of Malfy Since 1830, when Dyce put forth a complete edition of Webster, there has been published no edition of the playwright's two masterpieces, in critical text with adequate apparatus of introduction and annotation. Dyce, indeed, admirable editor as he was, left many difficult allusions unexplained, and, in modernizing his text, occasionally changed a meaning as well as a spelling or a stop. The present edition reverts to the original spelling, and seeks to note every variation of the slightest consequence occurring in the quartos. The Introduction discusses somewhat fully the dramatist's debt to his sources, essays to define the Shakespearean resemblance, and offers reasons for dating the plays within a narrower limit than has hitherto been accepted. In the Notes will be found comment on a number of points previously overlooked - some of these appear on pp. 190, 194, 201, 205, 388, 390, 392, 400 -but several allusions still remain obscure. I wish to offer my grateful acknowledgements to those who have given me assistance in the preparation of this volume, Mr. A. W. Pollard, Dr. Richard Garnett, Mr. P. A. Daniel, Mr. W. W. Greg, Professor George P. Baker, my colleague Professor Henry Stephenson, and most of all Mr. W. J. Craig. DOWNLOAD EBOOK"A fast-moving tale of courage, cruelty, hardship, and savagery."--Pittsburgh Post-Gazette In North America's first major conflict, known today as the French and Indian War, France and England--both in alliance with Native American tribes--fought each other in a series of bloody battles and terrifying raids. No confrontation was more brutal and notorious than the massacre of the British garrison of Fort William Henry--an incident memorably depicted in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans. That atrocity stoked calls for revenge, and the tough young Major Robert Rogers and his "Rangers" were ordered north into enemy territory to exact it. On the morning of October 4, 1759, Rogers and his men surprised the Abenaki Indian village of St. Francis, slaughtering its sleeping inhabitants without mercy. A nightmarish retreat followed. When, after terrible hardships, the raiders finally returned to safety, they were hailed as heroes by the colonists, and their leader was immortalized as "the brave Major Rogers." But the Abenakis remembered Rogers differently: To them he was Wobomagonda--"White Devil."
