DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The War and Our Financial Fabric In order to build up my arguments I start from the foundation, and in the earlier chapters deal with the monetary problem and the general working of the banking system. These lead us into the region of dialectics and controversy and to a survey of the happenings during the crisis. I urge amongst other contentions that banks do not in the true connotation of the word create credit. If it be possible to convince ourselves that they do not create credit, that credit is a something existing prior to and independently of banking, it will, I think, make the gold reserve problem easier to solve. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from War Finance IN September, 1914, Mr. Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that, as in the Napoleonic war, we should win in the end by our financial strength. Germany might get the first hundred millions as easily as Britain, but Britain had far greater staying power. It is not (he said) the first hundred millions that count, but the last. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The War and Our Financial Fabric In this work I attempt to gather up some of the lessons to be learnt from the experiences of the greatest of financial crises. Many predictions have been unrealized and many theories destroyed, and we are able, I think, to see with greater clearness and to grasp with more boldness the problems that perplexed us in the past. Banking, credit and currency problems have ever been subjects of contentious controversy, experts and academic critics alike being unable to agree upon their reading of phenomena and upon right interpretations. The problems are indisputably complex, the most complex, probably, in the vast domain of economics, and vision and logic have not guided us with sureness amidst their intricacies. Hence we have groped and gone our different ways, finding ourselves at no common goal. Royal Commissions have been asked for in order to tackle and, if possible, to find solutions that will be universally acceptable. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from War and National Finance The articles which follow were written for The Round Table between the years 1912 and 1920. They all deal in one way or another with the effects of war on the financial and economic structure of this country and the British Empire. I make no claim to be a trained economist, and the articles were, all of them, written in the midst of a busy life and from a practical standpoint. I have thought it preferable, never theless, to leave them exactly as they were written, except for the omission of certain redundant passages. The reader must judge to what extent they correctly portrayed and predicted before, during and after the war the actual course of events. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Financial Chapters of the War It would be presumptuous for any one to claim ability to answer all of them. One reason why this book bears its present title, instead of being described as a financial history of the war, is that the actual and relative importance of many eco nomic phenomena of the period cannot be deter mined conclusively until the war itself is over. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Economy and Finance of the War: Being a Discussion of the Real Costs of the War and the Way in Which They Should Be Met The greater part of this little book is constructed from material used in two public lectures delivered in Cambridge under the titles "The Economic Costs of the War" and "The Distribution of the Costs of the War." Some of the topics treated in it are also discussed in articles which I contributed to the Contemporary Review for December 1915 and April 1916; and a few passages from these articles are, with the kind permission of the Editor, reproduced verbatim. To obviate misunderstanding, it may be well to say that, while the general lines of analysis here set out would probably be accepted by most competent economists, I should not venture to claim an equal measure of assent for all the practical recommendations.
