Tracing the the potential of sound, infrasound, and ultrasound to access anomalous zones of transmission between the realms of the living and the dead. For as long as recording and communications technologies have existed, operators have evoked the potential of sound, infrasound, and ultrasound to access anomalous zones of transmission between the realms of the living and the dead. In Unsound:Undead, contributors from a variety of disciplines chart these undead zones, mapping out a nonlinear timeline populated by sonic events stretching from the 8th century BC (the song of the Sirens), to 2013 (acoustic levitation), with a speculative extension into 2057 (the emergence of holographic and holosonic phenomena). For the past seven years the AUDINT group has been researching peripheral sonic perception (unsound) and the ways in which frequencies are utilized to modulate our understanding of presence/non-presence, entertainment/torture, and ultimately life/death. Concurrently, themes of hauntology have inflected the musical zeitgeist, resonating with the notion of a general cultural malaise and a reinvestment in traces of lost futures inhabiting the present. This undead culture has already spawned a Lazarus economy in which Tupac, ODB, and Eazy-E are digitally revivified as laser-lit holograms. The obscure otherworldly dimensions of sound have also been explored in the sonic fictions produced by the likes of Drexciya, Sun Ra, and Underground Resistance, where hauntology is virtually extended: the future appears in the cracks of the present. The contributions to this volume reveal how the sonic nurtures new dimensions in which the real and the imagined (fictional, hyperstitional, speculative) bleed into one another, where actual sonic events collide with spatiotemporal anomalies and time-travelling entities, and where the unsound serves to summon the undead. Contributors Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Lendl Barcelos, Charlie Blake, Lisa Blanning, Brooker Buckingham, Al Cameron, Erik Davis, Kodwo Eshun, Matthew Fuller, Kristen Gallerneaux, Lee Gamble, Agnès Gayraud, Steve Goodman, Anna Greenspan, Olga Gurionova, S. Sometimes it's the family you can't choose who are the ones to save you. As I watched the rich Washington landscape of mountains and thick green forests, I didn't know what to expect. Granted, I was watching it from the back of a squad car, so it's not like I had a choice in the matter. High school is hard enough--dealing with hormones, grades, the pressure of college, social media, prom, sex ed... the list can go on forever. I wished for that kind of normalcy. Instead, I was being shipped way up to the middle of nowhere woods of Washington state--a serene community of cozy cabins, the smell of burning firewood... and enough troubled, drug-addicted, almost-criminal teens to make me wonder if this was a better option than juvie. Little did I know that these drug-addled, societal misfits were exactly what I needed to become myself again. Unsound follows a tight-knit group of troubled teenagers living at a boarding school for at-risk youths up in a remote forest in Washington State. These kids have had childhood ripped away from them but they're on the journey to take their lives back. 340 page standalone but with a sequel in the works.

Drawing together communiqus, covert interviews and underground histories of introvert struggles (Introfada), here for the first time is a detailed documentation of the political demands of shy people. Radicalized against the imperial domination of globalized PR projectionism, extrovert poise and loudness, the Shy Radicals are a vanguard movement intent on trans-rupting the extrovert-supremacist politics and assertiveness culture of the 21st-century. The movement aims to establish an independent homelandAspergistan, a utopian state for introverted people, run according to Shyria Law and underpinned by Pan-Shyist ideology, protecting the rights of the oppressed quiet and shy people. This anti-systemic manifesto, a quiet and thoughtful polemic, is a satire that uses anti-colonial theory to build a critique of dominant culture and the rising tide of Islamophobia. Shy Radicals author Hamja Ahsan (b. 1981) is an artist, curator and activist based in London. He is the Free Talha Ahsan campaign organizer.

I never realized how much I wanted to live until the choice was no longer mine. I’ve spent my entire life unraveling mysteries of the human mind as a police psychologist, but somehow, I’ve ended up here: drunk, mostly naked, and locked out of my own house in the rain. I think I might be an alcoholic. I refuse to enter rehab like my station chief wants. I’ll do it my way, by hiking Haleakala on Maui and kicking the booze on my own in the crater. Only, I’m not alone. There’s an unusual man on the doorstep of my cabin, and he wants his own brand of therapy. With me. Alcohol is no longer my biggest problem. Now I have to survive long enough to escape. This psychological thriller pits one woman’s personal demons against those of her stalker to create a compelling, well-told dual confession.”—Kirkus Reviews Toby Neal weaves a spell-binding suspense (novel) that pulls you in with breathtaking scenery, flawed characters, and brilliantly twisted psychology.
