Excerpt from The United States: Historical, Descriptive, and Statistical; With an Alphabetical Index to Counties, Mountains, Lakes, Rivers, &C., To Accompany Case's Map of the United States Territory ceded by Spain. - Florida, as ceded by Spain, embraced the territory within the present limits of that state, and all westward to the Mississippi River south of the 31st parallel, except the small area included within the Louisiana Purchase. Of this territory square miles are now included within the State Of Alabama, and square miles within the State of Mississippi. By the same treaty Spain also ceded to the United States all claim to the territory embraced within the former Province of Louisiana. Texas as Annexed. - The western boundary Of Texas had not been settled at the time of her annexation, but she claimed as far westward as the Rio Grande, and north ward to the Arkansas River. In 1850 her territory was reduced to its present limits by Congress, and in consider ation of She ceded 'to the United States all other territory to which She had any claim. Territory ceded by Mexico in 1848. - The territory acquired from Mexico in 1848, by the Treaty of Guada lupe Hidalgo, comprised all within the present limits of California, Nevada, and Utah, that part of Wyoming south of the 42d parallel and west of the Rocky Mountains, all of Colorado west of the dividing ridge of the Rocky Moun tains and south Of the Arkansas River, that part of New Mexico west of the Rio Grande and north of the Gila River, and all of Arizona north Of the Gila River.
