DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Tradesmen's Tokens of the Eighteenth Century Another dilemma to be met was the placing of those pieces with incorrect edges. In many cases, artists' proofs were doubtless struck upon already existing Tokens, the edge inscription of which would not agree with that upon the face, this, of course, was a matter of no moment; but then on the other hand large numbers of Tokens were issued with edges which were either purposely vague, such as Current Every Where, or what is worse, directly opposed to the legend on their face. Under these circumstances it has been decided to disregard the edges altogether, and to place the Tokens according to the obverse or reverse legend, putting the correct edge (when known) first, and the other edges to supplementary numbers, giving also a table of the various edges at the end of the book.
