Males and Tertiary Education in Jamaica is the result of five years' qualitative research examining the relationship between men and tertiary education. Herbert Gayle and Peisha Bryan focus on the lived experiences and perceptions of three sets of young men: those who did not qualify to enter university; those who qualified but bypassed tertiary education; and those who qualified but for varying reasons have delayed entry into university. Using rigorous, in-depth interviews to capture the lived experiences of 186 males between the ages of eighteen and thirty-nine years, compared to those of 74 females of the same comparative age group, the authors examine the realities of males regarding their wish or ability to attend university in Jamaica. They found that men's comparative absence from universities in Jamaica is cultural. Spurred by the world phenomenon of women's liberation, Jamaican families shifted their support towards educating women to the effect that female enrolment in tertiary institutions increased from 64 per cent of men in 1971 to 228 per cent of men in 2011. Participation in tertiary education in Jamaica is unquestionably gendered and this work is the first and book-length scholarly response to the question of why men are not attracted to tertiary education in Jamaica.
This book examines the experience of 11 universities in nine countries around the world that have grappled with the challenge of building successful research institutions in difficult circumstances and outlines key lessons of from this experience.
First published in 1976, School and College is a comparison of the variety of educational institutions – sixth forms, sixth form units, sixth form centres, sixth form colleges, school-college consortia, colleges of further education and tertiary colleges – attended by young people between sixteen and nineteen years of age. Each of these was supported by different educational interest groups, who made suppositions about their respective advantages and disadvantages. The findings reveal that what was supposed to happen sometimes did not happen. Dr. King explores the origin of the ideas behind each form of organisation, and examines the groups that propagated them. These ideas concerned not only the form of organisation but also the nature of education itself. He compares the policies with their practice, and concludes that changes might be required before the expectations of both students and educators can be fulfilled. This book will be of interest to teachers and students of education and pedagogy.

In turn, this analysis forms the basis for envisioning higher education in 2030. Here, four learning pathways are developed to provide a glimpse of higher education in 2030: Tamagotchi, a closed ecosystem that is built around individual students who enter the university soon after secondary education; Jenga, in which universities offer a solid foundation of knowledge to build on in later phases; Lego, where the course of study is not a monolithic unit, but consists of individually combined modules of different sizes; and Transformer, where students have already acquired their own professional identities and life experiences, which they integrate into their studies. The 16-19 sector of education is a transition stage for students and a system in transition for educators. At a time of rapid change the author assesses the significance of current trends and recent legislation for managers, teachers and lecturers in schools and colleges catering for this age group. Eric Macfarlane argues that the 16-19 sector provides both a microcosm and intensification of the tensions, divisions and conflicting aims and objectives present throughout the education system as a whole. He explores the differences that exist between the academic and vocational routes to qualification, between the comprehensive, selective and independent systems and between ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ approaches to the learning process. The ideologies and policies that have produced the present system are traced and the case for reform examined. Different management tasks in 16-19 education are considered, with emphasis on current changes in strategies and structures. The book highlights the distinctive features of the various types of institution that provide for students aged 16-19 and the ways in which these distinctions are becoming blurred.
