The Betrothed is the first of two Tales of the Crusaders. The action takes place in the Welsh Marches during the latter part of the reign of Henry II, after 1187. Eveline, the 16-year-old daughter of Sir Raymond Berenger, is rescued from a Welsh siege by the forces of Damian Lacy. She is betrothed to his uncle, Sir Hugo, who leaves on a crusade. Rebels led by Ranald Lacy attempt to kidnap her, and Damian fights them off, but a confused sequence of events convinces the King that she and her beloved are in league against him. The Talisman takes place at the end of the Third Crusade, mostly in the camp of the Crusaders in Palestine. Scheming and partisan politics, as well as the illness of King Richard the Lionheart, are placing the Crusade in danger. The main characters are the Scottish knight Kenneth, a fictional version of David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon, who returned from the third Crusade in 1190; Richard the Lionheart; Saladin; and Edith Plantagenet, a relative of Richard. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. He was the first modern English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.

He worked for the New American Library (Signet Books) and for every other major paperback publisher including Bantam, Avon, Pocket, Fawcett and Dell. In this lavishly illustrated book graphic designer Piet Schreuders reconstructs Avati's life and 40-year career. During the past 25 years most of Avati's original paintings have been salvaged from the warehouses of American publishers and now fetch many thousands of dollars among collectors. US scholars of literature explore how illustrated books became a cultural form of great importance in England and Scotland from the 1830s and 1840s to the end of the century. Some of them consider particular authors or editions, but others look at general themes such as illustrations of time, maps and metaphors, literal illustration, and city scenes. The Talisman Cock!, debut novel from award winning poet and short fiction writer Henry Joseph Russell, follows sixteen-year-old David Smith, a talented cross country runner from Cape Cod who believes he's living his "Personal Destiny" when he earns a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school near Boston. Alas, David's new roommate, a notoriously womanizing and wildly confident ice hockey prodigy named Johnny Connolly, doesn't believe in Destiny. A sort of metaphysical libertarian (and libertine!), Johnny claims "Jesus powers" of meditation and visualization have helped him fashion his "perfect reality," a life defined by countless one-night-stands, lofty athletic glory, and his most cherished "creation: " a rather large male organ he's lovingly named his "Talisman Cock!" But, when David becomes a hesitant disciple to Johnny's bizarre teachings, he unveils a stranger secret hidden behind his roommate's spiritual bravado: a Greater Destiny they both share. The Talisman Cock! is a modern, coming-of-age classic for young adults and adults alike. Tackling dynamic theological and philosophical issues with humor, eloquence and grace, Russell has penned an American, boarding-school yarn worthy of the pantheon beside A Separate Peace and The Catcher in the Rye.
