Excerpt from The Somerset Diocese, Bath and Wells My thanks are due to the Commissioners on Historical Manuscripts for allowing me to see, while yet in the press, the Calendars of the Wells Chapter Records, drawn up by the Rev. J. A. Bennett, rector of South Cadbury, to whom, also, I would express my thanks for his ready permission to use his work, and for much other help. Had I seen these interesting Calendars earlier my labour would have been lighter, and the result probably more satisfactory. To the Right Reverend Bishop Hobhouse, D. D., who has most kindly supplied me with much matter from manuscripts at Wells, to the Rev. C. M. Church, Canon of Wells, to E. Green, Esq., to the Rev. J. Hardman, LL. D., and other clergy of the diocese, I am indebted for help of various kinds, and especially for extracts from unpublished documents. Excerpt from The Mediaeval Nunneries of the County of Somerset, and Diocese of Bath Wells, 1867: Together With the Annals of Their Impropriated Benefices, From the Earliest Times to the Death of Queen Mary In the Volume now offered to the reader I have endeavoured to supply that portion of a Monasticon Dioecesis Bathoniensis et Wellensis, which includes the Houses occupied by and under the government of Religious Women, set forth with such minuteness and particularity of detail as I once entertained a hope of extending to the other division of such a work - that, namely, which would embrace the Houses of Religious Men - in one of the most interesting and beautiful of English Dioceses and Counties. Excerpt from Bath and Wells Can easily be recognized. Articles found among the ruins may be seen in the Pump-room; other Roman remains are plentiful at the museum close by. Adjoin ing the larger bath is a fine circular bath; in addition to this and several others there were vapour and hot air chambers. It may almost be said that what the Romans did not know about bathing is not worth knowing, even if they were not our masters in this as in some other respects. They reached Bath by im portant roads from Cirencester on the north, Silchester and Marlborough on the east, and Exeter on the south west; and from Bath they had a road, apparently crossing the Severn at Aust, leading to Caerwent and Caerleon. Some of these roads are probably pre Roman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
