Most discussions of sexuality today assume that differences between men and women are insubstantial, and that the boundary between the masculine and the feminine is highly porous. To reflect the idea that male and female roles have been ''socially constructed,'' they speak of gender instead of sex, and ridicule the double standard of ''studs'' and ''sluts.'' Because men and women are virtually interchangeable, it is argued, men should do an equal share of domestic work so that women can compete equally with men outside the home. This vision of androgyny has compelling aspects. But Dr. Steven Rhoads finds one problem: whatever we might like to believe, sex distinctions remain a deeply rooted part of human nature. In Taking Sex Differences Seriously, he assembles a wealth of scientific evidence showing that these differences are ''hardwired'' into our biology. They range from the subtle (women instinctively carry babies on their left side, near the maternal heartbeat) to the profound (women with higher testosterone levels are more promiscuous, more competitive, and more conflicted about having children). Rhoads explores male/female disparities in aggression and dominance, in sexuality and nurturing. He shows how denial of these differences has affected phenomena such as the sexual revolution and fatherless families, and policies such as Title IX and the call for universal day care. But he also says that society is improved by discouraging some natural tendencies, like men's temptation toward predatory sex, and encouraging others, like women's greater interest and talent in caring for babies. Steven Rhoads dispels social clichs and spotlights biological realities in this provocative book. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, Taking Sex Differences Seriously is a groundbreaking look at the way we are.

This book is a small part of my memories hanging out in the music scene of the 70's. I first met Randy in 1974 at well-known Hollywood club 'Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco' during the time he and Kelly Garni was playing with John Condon & his band 'Smokey'. I knew how great he was even back then. With a small ego & big personality, Randy was a fun, lighthearted kind of guy. Not shy really, but rather bashful, and very serious when it came to his Music. He was a lot of fun to be around & hang out with. We stayed friends until the end. His death devastated me... I never thought it would all end so soon. Randy Rhoads was an Amazing guitar player and a great person, and I am blessed to have known him. Jett Black

Frankie Valens autobiography, Chasing An Illusive Dream, is a story that contains the drama and pathos that inspired the old clich, Truth is stranger than fiction. Frankies story is a story of rags to riches to rags that started back in 1967 but left him with an enduring celebrity status. Linda Stinnett, Derby, KS Informer. This book will help give the reader his family history, and the story of the mistakes and accomplishments he made, and the incredible journey he took. His feelings of rejection at every turn, the constant fear of never being accepted or good enough to make a difference, and yet he experienced fame and fortune, later becoming a gospel recording artist, and traveling with his concert pianist wife Phyllis nationwide for over 18 years in a full-time music ministry. This book attempts to answer such questions such as: Is Frankie related to the famous Mallory/Duracell battery family? Is Frankie related to the singer Richie Valens? Was Daniel Boone Frankies cousin? Does Frankie share a grandmother with the famous Lucille Ball? What about Frankie being related to the Piper Cub airplane family? Because Frankie never became a major recording artist, it took years of hard work and dedication for him to try and become a household name. The Chinese Educational Mission was one of the earliest efforts at educational modernization in China. As part of the Self-Strengthening Movement, the Qing government sent 120 students to New England to live and study for a decade, before they were abruptly summoned home to China in 1881. This book, based upon extensive research in local archives and newspapers, focuses on the experiences of the students during their nine-year stay in the United States. Historians of modern China will find this book highly relevant because of its detailed account of one of the major projects of the Self-Strengthening Movement. To date, there are at most two credible studies in English and Chinese on the Chinese Educational Mission; both are deficient in source citation and tend to dwell on the students' experiences after their return to China rather than during their stay in America. This volume will also appeal to specialists in Asian-American studies, for its comparing and contrasting the experiences of the Chinese students with those of other Chinese in the United States during a period of rising anti-Chinese sentiment, which culminated in the enactment of Chinese Exclusion in 1882. This book offers a slightly different perspective than most other works on the nature of the anti-Chinese movement, which may have been more class-based rather than race-based. The compare and contrast of students from China with those from Japan, which also sent large numbers of students to New England at roughly the same period of time, will be of interest to East Asian comparative historians as well. Edward J. M. Rhoadsis a professor emeretus in history at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author ofChina's Republican Revolution: The Case of Kwangtung, 1895-1913andManchus and Han: Ethnic Relations and Political Power in Late Qing and Early Republican China, 1861-1928. "Rhoads has meticulously constructed the individual and collective histories of the 120 young men and boys sent by a beleaguered late Qing government to live and acquire English and Western knowledge in white New England families, schools and universities. As the vanguard of legions of Chinese students who have studied in the U.S. since, and as contemporaries of the far more numerous Chinese coolies whose paths they never crossed, this compelling study adds a surprising new chapter to early Asian American history." - Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Professor of History and Ethnic Studies; Director, Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Brown University
