Excerpt from The Rediscovery of Wordsworth N writing this book I have had three classes of people in mind. First, those who know practically nothing about Wordsworth, but who might be drawn into the circle of his influence should the right word be said. Second, those who know enough of the Poet to realize that they should go much farther, but who lack the guid ing clue. Third, those who know a great deal of Words worth as an honored poet of one hundred years ago, but who have not appreciated the unique significance of his message for our own particular time. Perhaps it is fair to add that I have named the classes of hoped-for readers in the reverse order of importance, as the matter has lain in my mind. At least I have felt that the message of the Poet is the main thing, and that there is no accounting for his steadily increasing influence, evidenced m so many ways, other than on the ground that to the modern world, to use his own expression, he has become, or is becoming A Mighty Voice. It has been my aim to show how closely his teachings fit into our present post-war situation, and to do this in a somewhat detailed way, passing from the lower to the higher, that is from nature to man, from man to society, and from society to the ethical and philosophical principles that underlie his work. Then, in order that the totality of impression might not be missed, I have added a brief summary at the end. Excerpt from William Wordsworth He respected himself, he revered his subject too much for that. The close personal intimacy, the frequent intercourse he had enjoyed with the venerable old man who had shown him an all but fatherly affection, so far from dulling his sense of what was due to such a character, only served to intensify it, and nothing would have given him greater pain than to dwell on the passing weak nesses, and the commonplace and unedifying de tails from which no human life is wholly exempt. Excerpt from Wordsworth Collection "To discover the laws of operative power in literary works, though it claims no small respect under the name of Criticism, is not commonly considered the work of a science." These are the words of Dr Whewell in his lecture on the Great Exhibition of last year, and it must be allowed that they are true words. We have critical opinions in great abundance, and often of great value, but we have no critical system. The critics feel their way, do not see it; we walk by faith, not by sight; our judgments too often show instinct without understanding. Hence it happens that now, when literary criticism cuts deeper than it ever cut before, it is all the more a labyrinth of confusion, - confusion worse confounded, - as vague indeed as it can well be. But, chaos though it be, it is a chaos pregnant with meaning, and richly deserving scientific arrangement. Towards the accomplishment of a work so very important and so very much needed; to the placing of criticism upon something like a scientific footing; in brief, towards a science of poetry and of poetic expression, I desire to contribute a mite.
