Hello my friendly readers! I am excitedly sharing my first professional review. Enjoy!INDIE READER REVIEW: 4.7/5.0!!!! (https: //indiereader.com/2019/01/tale-of-two-brothers/)Verdict: There's a lot for readers to like in author Daniel Fernández Masís' fusion of suspense and insight into the human condition in the TALE OF TWO BROTHERS, attempting to stop a deranged despot in the aftermath of a natural cataclysm that decimates natural resources across earth. In the aftermath of a natural cataclysm that decimated natural resources across earth, two brothers set up camp in an abandoned area of what was once the United States. Due to the paucity of resources, the brothers face unimaginable perils each day from marauders and herds of gangs pillaging anything in their path. Paranoia and adrenaline are constant realities for the two brothers; peace is a mirage. One day, one of the brothers, Jay, is kidnapped by a renegade gang, which is capturing and enslaving as many people as they can in an effort to gain control of the region. Nathan, the other brother, plots to save Jay and meets Silver, a sort of femme fatale, who is about as good at combat as the guys are. Eventually, all three plot a rebellion against the marauding gang, led by a thug named Cold, who is seeking a national tyranny of sorts and burning villages that oppose him. The last part of the book-which on occasion descends into rambling action scenes-feels almost like a flashback to Vietnam, but in an Americanized milieu.Author Daniel Fernández Masís imbues his prose throughout TALE OF TWO BROTHERS with indelible internal soliloquies by the characters, ones that are both stirring battle cries for human freedom, but also valuable insights into humanity coerced into extreme conditions. This is a dystopia, no doubt, but it is not one without hope, and this sense of fatalistic optimism carries the book beyond its depressing and often brutal surroundings. "When death seems to hover over you every day, people will heartbreakingly let go of the possibility of change," Masís writes . "But hope never vanishes completely. Thoughts and feelings deep within our minds and souls hang on, in solitude, to the notion of life without restraints and violence."There's a lot for readers to like in author Daniel Fernández Masís' fusion of suspense and insight into the human condition in the TALE OF TWO BROTHERS, attempting to stop a deranged despot in the aftermath of a natural cataclysm that decimates natural resources across earth. The Collected Works of Marie-Louise von Franz is a 28 volume Magnum Opus from one of the leading minds in Jungian Psychology. Volume 1, released on her 106th birthday, is to be followed by 27 more volumes over the next 10 years. Volume 2 turns to the Hero’s Journey within fairytales. The Hero’s Journey is about the great adventure that leads to a cherished and difficult to obtain prize. In these fairytales, the Self is often symbolized as that treasured prize and the hero’s travails symbolize the process of individuation. In its many manifestations, the hero embodies the emerging personality. “In the conscious world, the hero is only one part of the personality—the despised part—and through his attachment to the Self in the unconscious is a symbol of the whole personality.” Von Franz’s prodigious knowledge of fairytales from around the world demonstrates that the fairytale draws its root moisture from the collective realm. This volume continues where Volume 1 left off as von Franz describes the fairytale, “suspended between the divine and the secular worlds (…) creating a mysterious and pregnant tension that requires extreme power to withstand.” The resistance of the great mother against the hero and his humble origins, as well as the hero freeing the anima figure from the clutches of the unconscious are universal archetypal patterns. The spoils retrieved by the hero symbolize new levels of consciousness wrested from the unconscious.

This volume provides translations of texts on the Mamluk Sultan Qalāwūn (1279-90) and his son al-Malik al-Ashraf (1290-93), which cover the end of the Crusader interlude in the Syrian Levant. Translated from the original Arabic, these chronicles detail the Mamluk perception of the Crusaders, the Mongol menace, how this menace was confronted, and a wealth of materials about the Mediterranean basin in the late thirteenth century. Treaties, battles, sieges and embassies are all revealed in these chronicles, most of which have not been translated previously. The translated texts provide a range of historical records concerning Qalāwūn and al-Ashraf, and include the court perspective of Ibn `Abd al-Ẓāhir, the later biography by his nephew Shafī`, and the writings of the Mamluk historian Baybars al-Mansūrī.

Establishing science fiction as its own distinct and increasingly important narrative form, this book explores how the genre challenges pervasive perceptions of society as they appear in the conventional modern novel. Inspired by, and building upon, Georg Lukács's criticism of the orthodox novel for its depiction of life as alienating and disjointed, Milner, Murphy and Roberts demonstrate that science fiction steps beyond this contemporary form to be a more constructive form of literature, one able to conceive of society as complete, integrated and well-rounded. Taking stock of three kinds of science fiction which lie outside the scope of the modern novel – theological/ ontological science fiction, the science fiction of future history and epic science fiction – this book demonstrates the genre's unique capacity to encapsulate the whole world, persons and events, things and objects in a glance, and address the motive behind the longing for meaningful totality. With reference to a vast array of works by authors such as Michel Houellebecq, Elias Canetti, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, Marge Piercy, Iain M. Banks, Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, William Gibson, Dirk C. Fleck, Philip K. Dick, George Orwell and Kazuo Ishiguro, this book offers a compelling argument for rethinking the position and potential of the science fiction novel and to challenge the way we perceive our culture.
