DOWNLOAD EBOOKA reprint of a classic exposition of the understanding of the Old Testament. Rowley brings the Old Testament back to the forefront of Scholarship and finds rich meaning in much of what has previously been buried. Increasingly men are turning their thoughts to the deeper message of the Old Testament, and finding richer meaning in the light of all work that has been done. The Old Testament need not to be buried beneath the weight of scholarship, but may rather stand on the foundation of scholarship, sustained by it and firmly upheld before men - from the Preface.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Re-Discovery of the Old Testament Such a task is attempted here. Into the minutiae of scholarship I do not enter, not because I regard them as meaningless, but because their study lies behind, rather than in, this book. Elaborate documentation, which is rightly found in work intended for scholars, is here dispensed with, and the focus of interest is in the edifice of Old Testament thought rather than in the foundations of its study. Yet it is my hope that the edifice stands squarely on the foundations. For only so is it secure. If these pages can help any reader to a fuller apprehension of the religious meaning of this most wonderful Book, they will have fulfilled their purpose. For Biblical quotations I have kept largely to familiar words, though I have frequently modified the translation to some extent for reasons which are not stated, since they would distract the general reader. In no case has a change been introduced for a priori or dogmatic reasons, but only where philological or textual support could be provided to justify the change. It is a deep grief to me that while this book has been in the press Principal H. Wheeler Robinson has passed from our midst. I have left the Dedication unchanged. I have to thank Professor A. R.Johnson for his help in reading the proofs, and for his stimulating friendship, which has yielded many suggestions embodied in this book I have also to thank Professor T. W. Manson for reading my work in proof - and for many other kindnesses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
