Excerpt from The Pulpit and American Life Shortly before his death, the late Bishop Henry C. Potter of New York published a book on Eminent Churchmen he had known. Among the number thus treated were great English Churchmen like Dean Stanley of Westminster Abbey, Canon Liddon of St. Paul's, the present Bishop of London, Dr. Winnington-Ingram; and among Americans, Bishop Phillips Brooks, our greatest preacher and one of the noblest Americans. The literary critic of a New York daily, after praising the literary work of the book, added the depreciatory comment that it was a pity so much ability and labor were spent upon men whose work was" entirely aside from the main currents of human interests." Bishop Potter himself is sufficient answer to this common and superficial estimate of the preacher. He was not only pastor of churches in Troy, Boston, and New York, and finally Bishop of the most important diocese of his denomination, but by virtue of his character, position, and attainment was a force in the higher life of the city and nation. He was the first to point out the larger work of the Y. M. C. A. He was a pioneer in adapting the Church to its changed environment. He taught unflinchingly the social implications of Christian doctrine. He proclaimed the social duties of the new industrial order. He exposed the shame of a corrupt public life. He was a citizen Bishop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Pulpit: Sketches, Biographical and Descriptive, of Living American Preachers, and of the Religious Movements and Distinctive Ideas Which They Represent There has also been a purpose in these biographies - more than to gratify curiosity or exalt individuals - born out of a hope to promote Christian Union by grouping diverse Christian views. Excerpt from Annals of the American Pulpit, Vol. 1: Or Commemorative Notices of Distinguished American Clergymen of Various Denominations In the construction of the work, I have had an eye indirectly to the history of the Church, as well as directly to the biography of its ministers. I have, therefore, kept each denomination by itself, and have arranged the names under each chronologically, so that the gradual changes in the ministry can easily be traced, and the progress of the denomination also, so far as it is identified with the character and doings of its ministers. A chronological index is placed at the beginning of each denomination, and an alphabetical index at the close.
