In this book the author chronicles the history of a German-Polish family spanning over seven generations and two centuries. The Polish nation's fate, division, resistance, world wars, occupation and oppression, and exile imposed by its neighboring countries are the backdrop of this epic family history. For centuries the Richthofen family grew in number, power, and privilege in Germany. The best known member of the von Richthofen family in the 20th century is Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, aka the Red Baron, the World War I pilot whose courage and exceptional skills made him a legendary figure in the history of aviation. The storybook romance and marriage of Baron Wilhelm von Richthofen to beautiful Paulina Objezierska in 1826 founded the new Polish branch of the Richthofens. The couple travelled frequently around Europe and enjoyed months of aristocratic living in Italy and France. In Rome, Baroness von Richthofen's home was a who's who gathering place for the upper class, artists, and writers. In Paris, their son, Henryk von Richthofen, fell in love with and then married Maria Wielogłowska. This union firmly established the identity of the new Polish branch of the Richthofens. The German origin and patriotic attachment to Poland of her ancestors were a source of inspiration to the author as she wrote this passionate family saga.Unique never-before published documents and photos guarded by the author's family over two turbulent centuries were an invaluable source of information for this book. Anecdotes about the Polish von Richthofen family passed to the author by her grandmother and mother supplemented the family story. As a member of the von Richthofen family, the author had exclusive access to German documents that included insightful information about her ancestors. Thanks to the modern technology and digitalization of documents, the author was able to access the records of various archives that are available on the Internet. Extensive archival research and assessment of the carefully collected and studied documents allowed the author to draw a family portrait of great authenticity and tangibility for the reader.

This volume shows how families in different contexts – noble, urban, legal, religious - and across different periods of history from the late Middle Ages to the modern era, shaped the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its successor states, pre-partitioned and post-partitioned Poland. Contributors draw on a diverse range of different sources including rural and urban court registers, church registers, and population surveys to examine the economic bases of families as well as marital and family conflicts. The sources and the applied research methods enable contributors to characterize families led not only by men but also by single women. New research methods employed include approaches to family structures drawn from sociology, such as life-cycle and life-course analysis, as well as anthropological methods to reconstruct kinship in communities. Spanning several centuries, and from the river Oder to the Black Sea, the Baltic, Lithuania, Belarus and the Ukrainian borderlands, this volume is a major contribution to the historiography on East Central Europe, a region still too often omitted from histories of Europe. Framing the Polish Family in the Past will appeal to researchers and students alike in Polish and Lithuanian History and Medieval and Early Modern Society and Culture.

One of the most famous literary works of the 20th century, the novella “Death in Venice” embodies themes that preoccupied Thomas Mann (1875–1955) in much of his work; the duality of art and life, the presence of death and disintegration in the midst of existence, the connection between love and suffering, and the conflict between the artist and his inner self. Mann’s handling of these concerns in this story of a middle-aged German writer, torn by his passion for a Polish youth met on holiday in Venice, resulted in a work of great psychological intensity and tragic power.

Praise for Anno Dracula: "Kim Newman's Anno Dracula is back in print, and we must celebrate. It was the first mash-up of literature, history and vampires, and now, in a world in which vampires are everywhere, it's still the best, and its bite is just as sharp. Compulsory reading, commentary, and mindgame: glorious." - Neil Gaiman "Politics, horror, and romance are woven together in this brilliantly imagined and realized novel. Newman's prose is a delight, his attention to detail is spellbinding." - Time Out “Stephen King assumes we hate vampires; Anne Rice makes it safe to love them, because they hate themselves. Kim Newman suspects that most of us live with them… Anno Dracula is the definitive account of that post-modern species, the self-obsessed undead.” - New York Times “Anno Dracula will leave you breathless... one of the most creative novels of the year.” - Seattle Times “Powerful... compelling entertainment... a fiendishly clever banquet of dark treats.” - San Francisco Chronicle 'A ripping yarn, an adventure romp of the best blood, and a satisfying… read' - Washington Post Book World "The most comprehensive, brilliant, dazzlingly audacious vampire novel to date. 'Ultimate' seems an apt description... Anno Dracula is at once playful, horrific, intelligent, and revelatory." - Locus "A marvelous marriage of political satire, melodramatic intrigue, gothic horror, and alternative history. Not to be missed." - The Independent "Once you start reading this Victorian-era thriller, you will not be satiated until you reach the end." - Ain't It Cool "Anno Dracula is the smart, hip Year Zero of the vampire genre's ongoing revolution." - Paul McAuley "Kim Newman brings Dracula back home in the granddaddy of all vampire adventures. Anno Dracula couldn't be more fun if Bram Stoker had scripted it for Hammer. It's a beautifully constructed Gothic epic that knocks almost every other vampire novel out for the count." - Christopher Fowler "The most interesting take on the Dracula story... to date. Recommending this one to all those that love Dracula and historical fiction!" - RexRobotReviews -- WAR IS HELL... It is 1918 and Graf von Dracula is commander-in-chief of the armies ofGermany and Austria-Hungary. The War of the Great Powers in Europeis also a war between the living and the undead.
