This volume examines the Bible's role in the modern world - beginning with a treatment of its production and distribution that discusses publishers, printers, text critics, and translators and continuing with a presentation of new methods of studying the text that have emerged, including historical, literary, social-scientific, feminist, postcolonial, liberal, and fundamentalist readings. There is a full discussion of the changes in understandings of and approaches to the Bible in various faith communities. The dissemination of the Bible throughout the globe has also produced a host of new interpretations, and this volume provides a comprehensive geographical survey of its reception. In the final chapters, the authors offer a thematic overview of the Bible in relation to literature, art, film, science, and other disciplines. They demonstrate that, in spite of challenges to the Bible's authority in western Europe, it remains highly relevant and influential, not least in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people in his lifetime and many times each week. For 38 years in London he was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel later known as Metropolitan Tabernacle. He was a prolific writer and produced many kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, and autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and much more. His ability to speak and provoke thought with divine inspiration has amazed audiences in his lifetime as well as now. Spurgeon’s messages have been considered the best literature worldwide. While he is most remembered for being a minster and having a church, his most powerful influence was that he exercised on his fellow ministers and theological students. He organized a college, trained approximately 850 students, spoke at an annual conference of ministers, and looked at this as just part of ’life’s labour and delight’ and these facts are not known as well today. These lectures are filled with down to earth practical points and advice for young ministers. His sense of humor seasons his lectures with an air of refreshment that cannot be found elsewhere. Spurgeon's Lectures to my Students, contains the substance of Spurgeon's regular Friday afternoon addresses to the college students. This new complete and unabridged publication by Delmarva Publications offers a linked table of contents and a new format for ease of reading.

Excerpt from The Pictorial Bible, Vol. 1: Being the Old and New Testaments According to the Authorized Version Illustrated With Many Hundred Wood-Cuts And this is confirmed by the subsequent historical books, which constantly refer to the books of Moses as well known and familiar to the whole nation, from the time of the death of Moses to the termination of the Old Testament history. See Josh. I. 7, 8 xxiii. 6. Compare Josh. Xxiv. 26 with viii. 32, 34. See also Kings ii. 3 2 Kings xxii. 8 2 Chron. Xxxiv. 14. To show that such references are made to the very same books of Moses that we now possess, nothing more is requisite than to make a careful comparison of the passages in the historical books with the passages alluded to in the Pentateuch. Compare 2 Kings xiv. 6, with Deut. Xxiv. 6: 2 Kings xxiii. 2-25; and 2 Chron. Xxxv. 1-19 with Lev. Xxvi. 3-45, and Deut. Xxvii. 11, to xxviii. 68: Ezra iii. 2-6 with Lev. Vi. 7: Ezra vi. 18 with Num. Iii. 6-45: viii. Ll, 14; Neh. 1. 7-9 with Lev. Xxvi. 41, and Deut. Iv. 26, 27 xxviii. 64; xxx. 3-5. Thus every allusion in the historical books has its cor responding passage in the Mosaical books; and there is no discrepancy in this series of incidental and unbroken testimony, commencing with Joshua, immediately after the death of Moses, and extending through a period of more thana thousand years. The prophetical books also afford conclusive evidence both of the existence and identity of the five books of Moses. This may be shown by comparing the allusions of the earlier prophets to the Mosaical law with the Pentateuch as we now have it. Joel lived 650 years after Moses. Compare Joel 1. 9, 13 with Lev. Ii. 6; Num. Xv. 4, 5, 7 xxviii. 7, 14; Deut. Xii. 6, 7; xvi. 10, ll. Amos lived 660 years after Moses. Compare Amos ii. 9, with Num. Xxi. 21, 24: iv. 4 with Num. Xxviii. 3, 4: iv. 10 with Exod. Vii.-xi.: iv. 11 with Gen. Xix. 24, 25; ix. 13 with Lev. Xxvi. 5. Hosea lived 670 years after Moses. Compare Hos. Ix. X. With Num. Xxv. 3 xi. 8 with Gen. Xix. 24, 25 xii. 4, 5 with Gen. Xxxii. 24, 25 xii. 12 with Gen. Xxviii. 5; xxix. 20. Isaiah lived about 690 years after Moses. Compare Isa. 1. 9-14 with Gen. Xix. 4, and with various precepts; xii. 2 with Exod. Xv. 2; 11. 2, with Gen. Xii. 2; xvii. 2; liv. 9 with Gen. Viii 21, 22. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
