Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1923, Vol. 47 Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - To tell the story of the scientists of Philadelphia would require many hours. I propose therefore to restrict myself to a recital of the work of some of the men who were partial to my science, chemistry, because it is the oldest of the sciences. All other sciences are dependent upon it. In the language of another, it has done more for the comfort, the welfare and the happiness of man than all the others put together. There was a time when chemistry was looked upon as the black art. There was a period in its history when kings and emperors called it to their aid. Ivhen their money coffers were depleted they looked to the devotees of the science to replenish them. That was the period in which chemis try bore the name alchemy, when it was said to be the science or the art of making gold and silver; when through the instrumentality of what was termed the philosopher's stone, base, ignoble metals were trans muted into the precious metals, silver and gold. No one ever dreamed that alchemy was practiced outside of Europe. If five years ago any chemist in any part of the world had been asked whether alchemy was. Jacob Hochstetler is a peace-loving Amish settler on the Pennsylvania frontier when Native American warriors, goaded on by the hostilities of the French and Indian War, attack his family one September night in 1757. Taken captive by the warriors and grieving for the family members just killed, Jacob finds his beliefs about love and nonresistance severely tested. Jacob endures a hard winter as a prisoner in an Indian longhouse. Meanwhile, some members of his congregation—the first Amish settlement in America—move away for fear of further attacks. Based on actual events, Jacob's Choice describes how one man's commitment to pacifism leads to a season of captivity, a complicated romance, an unrelenting search for missing family members, and an astounding act of forgiveness and reconciliation. In Resisting Independence, Brad A. Jones maps the loyal British Atlantic's reaction to the American Revolution. Through close study of four important British Atlantic port cities—New York City; Kingston, Jamaica; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Glasgow, Scotland—Jones argues that the revolution helped trigger a new understanding of loyalty to the Crown and empire. This compelling account reimagines Loyalism as a shared transatlantic ideology, no less committed to ideas of liberty and freedom than the American cause and not limited to the inhabitants of the thirteen American colonies. Jones reminds readers that the American Revolution was as much a story of loyalty as it was of rebellion. Loyal Britons faced a daunting task—to refute an American Patriot cause that sought to dismantle their nation's claim to a free and prosperous Protestant empire. For the inhabitants of these four cities, rejecting American independence thus required a rethinking of the beliefs and ideals that framed their loyalty to the Crown and previously drew together Britain's vast Atlantic empire. Resisting Independence describes the formation and spread of this new transatlantic ideology of Loyalism. Loyal subjects in North America and across the Atlantic viewed the American Revolution as a dangerous and violent social rebellion and emerged from twenty years of conflict more devoted to a balanced, representative British monarchy and, crucially, more determined to defend their rights as British subjects. In the closing years of the eighteenth century, as their former countrymen struggled to build a new nation, these loyal Britons remained convinced of the strength and resilience of their nation and empire and their place within it.
