Excerpt from The Passing of the Shereefian Empire This book is intended as a record of events in Morocco during the past two years as they have come under my personal observation. This period has been perhaps the most momentous and critical in the history of the country, and from it will surely date the decline of Morocco's independence. I was present during the early part of the French campaign in the Chaouia, and was one of the very first to go to Fez, and to meet Moulai el Hafid after his successful advance on the capital from Morocco city. I lived for some months on most intimate terms with the Sultan, before he was acknowledged by the Powers, at a time when he could be approached with a facility now no longer possible, and I had many opportunities of forming an estimate of his character and abilities. As an instructive contrast, I was also brought into contact with Abdul Aziz during the closing months of his troubled reign. In the unstable international conditions of the post Cold War world, the role of diplomacy has taken on increasing importance with the greater complexity of relationships between international power centres. The Practice of Diplomacy tracks the historical development of diplomatic relations and methods from the earliest period up to their current transformations in the late twentieth century, showing how they have changed to encompass new technological advances and the needs of modern international environments. This coherent and accessible text brings the history of diplomacy fully up to date, exploring altered perspectives and newly emerging practices resulting from United Nations diplomacy and recent political developments in Eastern and central Europe, including the former Yugoslavia.

This book contains a fascinating treatise on the English King, Edward VII. It is not intended as a biography, but is instead an attempt to provide a picture - and some slight interpretation - of his reign. This volume will appeal to those with an interest in Edward VII and English kingship in general, and would make for a worthy addition to collections of related literature. The chapters of this book include: "The Pageant of Succession", "An Uneasy Heritage", "The Restless Years", "Descensus Averni", "Contact", "The Fortress", "The Sallies", "Surrender", "Sour-Apple Harvest", "The Changing Empire", and "A House in Order". This book was first published in 1935, and is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
