After facing the Borg menace, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is looking forward to a little exploration when the enigmatic Q informs them that the universe is at stake if they don’t unravel the mystery of a strange planet in this Star Trek: The Next Generation novel. Nearly two decades ago, Jean-Luc Picard took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, knowing it was an honor without equal. On her first mission, the Enterprise was sent to Farpoint Station for a simple, straightforward investigation. Perfect for a crew that had never served together. Then there was Q; an omnipotent lifeform that seemed bent on placing obstacle after obstacle in the ship’s—and in particular in Picard’s—way. And it hadn’t ended with that first mission. When he was least expected, Q would appear. Pushing, prodding, testing. At times needling captain and crew with seemingly silly, pointless, and maddening trifles. Then it would turn all too serious, and the survival of Picard's crew was in Q’s hands. Why was it today that Picard was remembering the day he took command of the Enterprise-D? Now he commanded a new ship, the Enterprise-E, with a different crew. But Picard couldn’t shake the feeling that something all too familiar was going on. All too awful. All too Q.

Preparing the next generation to inherit the family enterprise is the single most important determinant of a successful generational handoff. It depends significantly on both the senior generation and junior generation taking active roles in the preparation process. Specifically, what can each generation do to help develop the next generation? What does each generation want from the other throughout this journey? These and related questions have been discussed by families from around the world every year since 1997 at the Families in Business program at Harvard Business School. Next Generation Success offers a convenient summary of these rich conversations between senior and junior generation members regarding what each generation can do to help the next generation develop as effective managers, owners and family members. The perspectives of both generations are compared over a 10 year period. Included are Professor John Davis' candid letters to both generations offering wisdom on managing the challenges-and enjoying the rewards-of successfully transitioning the family enterprise to the next generation.

Through my day-to-day living, I saw a concerning development within our societal sphere. My concern is on a break among the generations that runs deeper than the normal trends of the younger generations being technologically savvy and the more mature generations talking about the aEURoeold days.aEUR We look at the greatest generation that faced the Great Depression as children then World War II as young adults. We look at the baby boomers as they ushered in an era of a strong work ethic and resourcefulness. The Gen X expanded technology. The millennials show their street smarts and are avid consumers. Then we see how the Gen Z develops their social media consumption habits and how they are always wired. This writing is to construct a new generation for looking forward to a change in our present-day generations. I hope my perspective will bring about some insight as to why we, as a generation, have been disconnected and why it is important to reconnect with all generations. The discussions here are the causes of the generational divide and some methods on how to bridge the gap among the generations. In the early stage of any writing, I examine how Martin Luther King Jr. sought to bridge the gap between the races to bring about a more perfect union. My goal is to bridge the generational gap to bring about a more harmonious people. Now is the time for us to evaluate and reevaluate our focus toward the goal of recovering our connection with all generations.
