Excerpt from The Mountains of California, Vol. 2 Minutes to an hour or two. One soon becomes so accustomed to see them that the noon sky seems empty and abandoned without them, as if Nature were forgetting something. When the glorious pearl and alabaster clouds of these noonday storms are being built I never give attention to anything else. No mountain or mountain range, however divinely clothed with light, has a more enduring charm than those eeting mountains Of the sky oating foun tains bearing water for every well, the angels of the streams and lakes; brooding in the deep azure, or sweeping softly along the ground over ridge and dome, over meadow, over forest, over garden and grove; lingering with cooling shad ows, refreshing every ower, and soothing rugged rock brows with a gentleness of touch and gesture wholly divine. Famed naturalist John Muir (1838-1914) came to Wisconsin as a boy and studied at the University of Wisconsin. He first came to California in 1868 and devoted six years to the study of the Yosemite Valley. After work in Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, he returned to California in 1880 and made the state his home. One of the heroes of America's conservation movement, Muir deserves much of the credit for making the Yosemite Valley a protected national park and for alerting Americans to the need to protect this and other natural wonders. The mountains of California (1894) is his book length tribute to the beauties of the Sierras. He recounts not only his own journeys by foot through the mountains, glaciers, forests, and valleys, but also the geological and natural history of the region, ranging from the history of glaciers, the patterns of tree growth, and the daily life of animals and insects. While Yosemite naturally receives great attention, Muir also expounds on less well known beauty spots.

Excerpt from The City of the Saints: And Across the Rocky Mountains to California I need hardly say that this elaborate account of the Holy City of the West and its denizens would not have seen the light so soon after the appearance of a Journey 'to Great Salt Lake City, by M. Jules Remy, had there not been much left to say. The French naturalist passed through the Mormon Settlements in 1855, and five years in the Far West are equal to fifty in less conservative lands; the results of which are, that the relation of my experiences will in no way clash with his, or prove a tire some repetition to the reader of both. Excerpt from The Everlasting Whisper: A Tale of the California Wilderness II was springtime in the California Sierra. Never were skies bluer, never did the golden sun-flood steep the endless forest lands in richer life-giving glory. Ridge after ridge the mountains swept on and fell away upon one side until in the vague distances they sank to the monotonous level of the Sacramento Valley; down there it was already summer, and fields were hot and brown. Ridge after ridge the mountains stretched on the other side, rising steadily, growing ever more august and mighty and rocky; on their crests across the blue gorges the snow was dazzling white and winter held stubbornly on at altitudes of seven thousand feet. Thus winter, springtime, and ripe, f ruit-dmpping summer coexisted, touching fingers across the seventy miles that lie be tween the icy top of the Sierra and the burning lowlands. Excerpt from Kings and Kern Canyons and the Giant Forest of California Then the ride up the floor of the canyon - that splendid fur row plowed by the glacier - through flowers and meadows, by lines of lateral moraines, among incense cedars and sugar pines, and beside smooth, hard granite walls lifted defiantly to the heavens to feet high, while the river, three times the volume of the Merced, shouts as if glad of its escape into sun shine out of the dark canyons where it was born - what sur prises the ride has, and what enjoyment! You must be a veteran of the mountains if you can make that journey for the fi.sr time without a tumult of emotion - or a crick in your neck from looking up. It is part of the spurious culture of today to be, or affect to be, proof against surprise, and to stifle emotion as a mark of crudeness, but happy the man who keeps fresh the founts of feeling in the presence of great Nature. He will enjoy these vast solitudes, and not be ashamed if the very greatness and splendor of what he sees wrings a cry of admiring wonder from his lips. Dr. Le Conte, critical, scholarly, inured to scenes of grandeur in the mountains, says of his experiences in this re gion: The trail becomes steeper and rougher, cascades and falls more frequent and more beautiful, and the scenery grander and more impressive, until finally as we approached the summit I could not refrain from screaming with delight. Standing on the narrow shelf at the summit of Mt. Stan ford overlooking the canyon, and feet above the sea, Dr. Jordan once said: I have never seen a more magnificent mountain panorama. I have seen the mountains of this continent from Alaska to Mexico, and I have tramped many mountain miles in the Alps, but such a comprehensive view of mountain masses and peaks and amphitheaters and can yons, of all the details of mountain sculpture on the tremendous scale that we are looking on now, I have never before seen.
