Excerpt from Meanings of Music One of the papers I took with me to Europe, and had it criticized by a pupil of Leschetizky. It is on the ground of this double encouragement that I now present the collection to music-lovers, students and educators, trusting that the time may come when our Government will make an appropriation for Music Schools throughout the length and breadth of the land, so that, where there are now three or four there may be thousands upon thousands who can study and enjoy the glorious compositions which wing the thoughts and elevate the soul. Excerpt from Mission Songs: A Collection of Hymns and Music, Designed for Sabbath Schools All tunes and melodies, which, from their peculiar construction, or from association, are purely secular, are avoided and much care is taken to present tunes whose me lodic arrangement is Within the reach of such voices as are usually called upon to lead and at the same time attractive enough to be easily learned and remembered by the young warm hearts for whom they are designed. Much care has been taken in the selection of poetry, and many thanks are due to the American Sunday School Union, and the New England Sabbath School Union, for the use 'of many of their beautiful and appropriate hymns. The music has been composed and selected expressly for the words; and it will have accomplished its legitimate object only so far as it aids and assists in understanding and retaining the' meaning of the words used. Excerpt from The Appreciation of Music The following chapters are a condensation of a series of lec tures delivered some years ago at the College for Women, Cleveland, Ohio. They are intended, especially, for the large class of readers who are interested in music, but who have never made a study of it and are ignorant of its technical aspects. The aim is to give an insight into the structural features of the art, without bewildering with long and pedantic discussion. Clearness and simplicity of exposition are there fore the only ends sought. A careful study of the contents, coupled with intelligent listening in the concert-hall will, it is hoped, enable even the layman to gain considerable knowledge about the complexities which usually appear so formidable. While the author has attempted to be original in the method of presentation, it was almost unavoidable for him to undergo the influence of existing treatises in regard to the subject matter of his book. This is so especially with reference to the choice of technical terms, the classification of musical forms. And the like. Naturally it was better to follow the path of accepted authorities in these things than to attempt novel presentations at all costs. Among the works to which obliga tion is due may be mentioned: Elson's Theory of Music, bussler-cornell's Theory and Practice of Musical Form, Parry's Art of Music, and Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. The illustrations have mainly been drawn from the realm of instrumental music, the reason being that most of the subjects considered, e. G. Counterpoint, thematic work, and instrumenta tion, have found their best embodiment in this species of music. Insofar as vocal compositions make use of the features in question, they are effective in the same way as compositions performed solely by instruments; hence what is said of the latter will also apply to the former. Excerpt from Music in the Church The subject Of our study is Music in the Church, i.e. Music subject to the influence and employed in the service Of religion. Like all the other arts, music has been brought into close association with religion, and has not only been able to render valuable aid to the Church in her worship, but has itself been enormously benefited and enriched by the new Spirit breathed into it by that association. It was indeed the demands made by the Church upon the art that awakened it from the lethargy in which it lay, and urged it forward to develop its resources. The early history Of music, once it attained the dignity Of an art worthy to have its history recorded, is almost entirely a history of sacred music. But the association of music with religion is not merely a matter Of past history. TO the present day that association continues with most beneficial results both to the Church and to the art of music. True, with the advance Of the art it was able to strike out new forms and to develop along other lines. Sacred music, instead Of being the whole of the art, is now only one branch Of it. But it is a branch of the utmost importance. The art would be incalculably the poorer were the musical wealth which it has poured into the treasury Of the Church not credited to it. And on the other hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Enjoyment of Music What then is meant by listening? Something m more than the mere reception of sounds by the ears. Listen is to attend, to stretch and bend the mind with sense of hearing to what is offered. It means, theref the effort to exclude other things the what he desires to hear and tries not to hear other sounds. He gives himself to this and for the time takes himself away from the rest of the world. If we are to listen to music we shall repeat this double process of attention of reservation over and over again for the same sounds, the same groups and sequences of sounds, the same piece or work. From this repetition two results must follow first, we get into the habit of listening to this work as a whole, and second, within the work as a whole we learn to distinguish various parts we learn, in fact, what to listen for, and we listen for that. But we shall not always listen to the same work, when we are listening to music; we: shall hear various works by various writers. To all of them we shall come with the determination to attend, with the willingness to yield ourselves to them, and yet with the sturdy purpose of retaining our judgment and our self respect. We shall listen for what they have to say. As in listening to an orator we are not content to have our ears delighted with the notes of his voice, but also insist on knowing what he means, so in listening to music we are not, or ought not to be content with sounds, but must know what the musician means by them. Yet here a danger threatens us. The musician means what he says in sound, that and nothing else music must be musically received. It is not to be translated into the language of words.
