DOWNLOAD EBOOKJane Dormer, Duchess of Feria, was born in 1538 into a family at the heart of Court struggles between Catholicism and Protestantism, and married twenty years later into the world of the Spanish Court, refuge of exiled English Catholics. The marriage lasted 13 years, and after her husband's death in 1571 the Duchess of Feria remained a powerful figure. She restored her Spanish family's fortunes. She took on the role of England's Catholic ambassador in Spain, and was instrumental in the foundation of the English College at Valladolid. At the same time she kept on the good side of Queen Elizabeth, and looked after English Protestants who found themselves in need passing through Spain.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAntonio Perez, the brilliant but erratic secretary to Philip II of Spain, became in the years of his exile a political agent in the service of the Earl of Essex, arriving at the Court of Queen Elizabeth in 1593. On behalf of Essex, who valued him as a friend, a partner and a humanist scholar, he cast an intelligence network over Italy; and he made a striking, though dangerous, contribution to the Essex cult.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA history focused on the monarchs’ intimate daily lives that “furnishes readers with a ‘Hey, did you know…?’ on almost every page” (The New York Times Book Review). England’s Tudor monarchs—Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I—are perhaps the most celebrated of history’s royal families. But for all we know about them, their lives away from the public eye remain largely beyond our grasp. Here, an acclaimed historian delves deep behind the public facade of the monarchs, showing us what their lives were like beyond the stage of the court. Drawing on original material from those closest to them—courtiers like the “groom of the stool,” a much-coveted position, surprisingly—Tracy Borman examines Tudor life in fine detail. What did the monarchs eat? What clothes did they wear, and how were they designed, bought, and cared for? How did they wield power? When sick, how were they treated? What games did they play? How did they practice their faith? And whom did they love, and how did they give birth to the all-important heirs? Exploring their education, upbringing, and sexual lives, and taking us into the kitchens, bathrooms, schoolrooms, and bedrooms at court, The Private Lives of the Tudors charts the course of the entire dynasty, surfacing new and fascinating insights into these celebrated figures. “No royal family is better known…But there’s still much to learn from The Private Lives of the Tudors thanks to the expertise and persistence of Borman…The most captivating moments of Private Lives, and there are plenty of them, bring the reader into other personal Tudor moments of strength, weakness, and heartache.”?Christian Science Monitor “Comprehensively researched and compulsively readable…thoroughly entertaining.”?Minneapolis Star Tribune

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Spanish Armada conjures up images of age-old rivalries, bravery and treachery. However the same Spanish monarch who sent the Armada to invade England in 1588 was, just a few years previously, the King of England and husband of Mary Tudor. This important new book sheds new light on Philip II of Spain, England's forgotten sovereign. Previous accounts of Mary's brief reign have focused on the martyrdom of Protestant dissenters, the loss of English territory, as well as Mary's infamous personality, meaning that her husband Philip has remained in the shadows. In this book, Harry Kelsey uncovers Philip's life - from his childhood and education in Spain, to his marriage to Mary and the political manoeuvrings involved in the marriage contract, to the tumultuous aftermath of Mary's death which ultimately led to hostile relations between Queen Elizabeth and Philip, culminating in the Armada. Focusing especially on the period of Philip's marriage to Mary, Kelsey shows that Philip was, in fact, an active King of England and took a keen interest in the rule of his wife's kingdom. Casting fresh light on both Mary and Philip, as well as European history more generally, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the Tudor era.
