Excerpt from The Language of Flowers: With an Introduction It is designed for all parts of the United States; but if any are disappointed in not finding here some flowers they seek, they must remember that this charming language is not yet perfected, and we have been unwilling to attach arbitrary and unauthorized meanings to many of our native blossoms which certainly deserve and convey a sentiment as well as their older foreign sisters. Excerpt from The Language of Flowers: Floral Emblems of Thoughts, Feelings, and Sentiments Before the different languages which are now common among men were developed, various animate and inanimate objects were made use of instead of words, for the purpose of giving expression to thoughts. Animals, birds, and flowers were emblems of individuals and their characteristics; and though sometimes erroneously assigned, they are yet very generally adopted. Lions and foxes, eagles and hawks, and an almost endless number of quadrupeds and fowls of the air, have been thus applied and are still; yet, since most of us are little familiar with beasts and birds of prey, in these days of high civilization, it is natural that we should make choice of objects which are mixed up with our daily life, when we desire to give expression to our opinions or feelings by means of symbols rather than words. In the vegetable kingdom we find objects most suitable for this purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Language of Flowers, With Illustrative Poetry: To Which Is Now First Added, the Calendar of Flowers But little study will be requisite for the science which we teach. Nature has been before us. We must, however, premise two or three rules. When a ower is presented in its natural position, the senti ment is to be understood affirmatively; when re versed, negatively. For instance, a rose-bud, with its leaves and thorns, indicates fear with hope but, if reversed, it must be construed as saying you may neither fear nor hope. Again, divest the same rose-bud of its thorns, and it permits the most sanguine hope; deprive it of its petals, and retain the thorns, and the worst fears may be entertained. The expression of every ower may be thus varied by varying its state or position. The Marigold is emblematical of pain; place it on the head and it signifies trouble of mind; on the heart, the pangs of love; on the bosom, the disgusts of ennui. The pronoun I is expressed by inclining the symbol to the right, and the pronoun than by inclining it to the left. Excerpt from Flora's Lexicon: An Interpretation of the Language and Sentiment of Flowers, With an Outline of Botany, and a Poetical Introduction Tun language of flowers has recently attracted so much attention, that an acquaintance with it seems to be deemed, if not an essential part of a polite educa tion, at least a graceful and elegant accomplishment. A volume furnishing a complete interpretation of those meanings most generally attached to flowers, has therefore become a desirable, if not an essential part of a gentleman's or a lady's library. In the manual now ofl'ered to the public, an attempt has been made to comprise all that is important in the way of inter pretation in a reasonable compass, and to adorn this part of the work with such quotations from the best poets of our language, both native and foreign, as have a direct and graceful reference either to the peculiarities of the flowers, or to the sentiments which they are made to express. The outline of Botany placed at the end of the volume will be found to con tain a sufficiently clear exposition of the Linnean sys tem to explain fully the scientific terms and the classi fication used in the body of the work.
