Excerpt from The Indian Names of Boston, and Their Meaning It will be seen that the region of Me Neck to which Shawmut (sha-um-ut) applied had its nar rowest part between Haymarket Square and North Street, about on a line at right angles to the front of Oak Hall. In the time of Winthrop a canal was cut along what is now Blackstone Street, per mitting small craft loaded with wood or other supplies procured on the shores of the Charles or Mystic to pass through for the needs of the dwell ers on the east side of the peninsula. The Neck proper extended scarcely a hundred yards along what is now Hanover Street, and comprised with it a strip on either side, a little more than twice the width of the present street, as laid down on Winsor's map. The farthest reach of the water from the east was a point about midway between Union and Blackstone streets, and equally distant from North and Hanover streets. The late Dr. T. W. Harris, librarian of Harvard College, as I am informed by Mr. Charles Deane. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. No state in the entire Nation is richer in Indian names, or in fact, in Indian history than Pennsylvania. These Indian names of Pennsylvania are full of music, but, of far greater importance, they are full of history. A History of the Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania, which was first published in 1928, is the only major book of the 20th century that traces Pennsylvania’s Indian place and names for their correct form, origin and history. Its pages are filled with the most incredible collection of information ever assembled on the Indian villages of Pennsylvania and their Indian place names and is an Indian history scholar’s delight. In preparing his book, Dr. Donehoo researched every available source of printed material about Indian place names in Pennsylvania. He also walked nearly every Indian trail, from the Delaware to the Ohio, using early trader’s journals and maps as his guide, to seek out the places the Indians lived. Each Indian name comes complete with historical notes by the author. The book includes a list of all the sources used to authenticate each Indian place name. An excellent bibliography follows at the conclusion of the work along with appendixes listing: the Indian villages of New York destroyed by General Sullivan’s army in 1779, prehistoric works in Pennsylvania by county, and an alphabetical listing of all Indian named places in each county.

The names which the original inhabitants assigned to our mountains, plains and valleys, are mostly lost. Many of our rivers, bays, and falls of water are yet known by their ancient Indian names. On account of their originality, antiquity, signification, singularity, and sound, these names ought to be carefully preserved. In every respect they are far preferable to the unmeaning application, and constant repetition of an improper English name. " Samuel Williams, LL.D., Natural and Civil History of Vermont My sole aim in the production of this volume has been to collect the accessible Indian Place and Proper Names of New England, and to give the locations of the one, with their interpretations, as far as possible, and the tribal affiliations of the other.
