Emma Anna Marie Clarke has written poetry from the age of 12, she started when her teacher was stuck for lesson ideas on rainy Friday afternoons. Her first poem was about a mouse called Freddy! Later English teachers, specifically a Mrs Huggett, encouraged writing poetry too, and so by the age of 17, she began to write poems for herself to vent emotions, creating her first grown-up poem called Mr and Mrs Personality. Then after marriage at age of 26, she stopped writing, maybe because she was happy! 15 years later, and a widow, she produced a collection of poems called The Impediment to my Success.

#1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. Its many fans include a former governor and movie star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a hip hop icon (LL Cool J), an Irish tennis pro (James McGee), an NBC sportscaster (Michele Tafoya), and the coaches and players of winning teams like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, and University of Texas men’s basketball team. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck. If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era.

From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller. Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

The hidden brain is the voice in our ear when we make the most important decisions in our lives—but we’re never aware of it. The hidden brain decides whom we fall in love with and whom we hate. It tells us to vote for the white candidate and convict the dark-skinned defendant, to hire the thin woman but pay her less than the man doing the same job. It can direct us to safety when disaster strikes and move us to extraordinary acts of altruism. But it can also be manipulated to turn an ordinary person into a suicide terrorist or a group of bystanders into a mob. In a series of compulsively readable narratives, Shankar Vedantam journeys through the latest discoveries in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral science to uncover the darkest corner of our minds and its decisive impact on the choices we make as individuals and as a society. Filled with fascinating characters, dramatic storytelling, and cutting-edge science, this is an engrossing exploration of the secrets our brains keep from us—and how they are revealed.

What if I told you that complete acceptance of our identity is fundamental to our way of life, since every interaction emerges from our authentic self? The number one problem nowadays is the fact we have lost contact with our true identity. We subscribe to ideologies and beliefs regarding who we should be because we want to be accepted. This comes at a cost to our self-worth, since we give up an aspect of ourselves and lose our authenticity. Are you tired of not having your personal needs met? Do you want to live a better life but don't know how? My book will help you reconnect you with the core of your essential self. It is a move away from whom you should be, which is adopted by popular culture. My book invites you to reconnect with the deepest part of your being, which knows who you are and how you should live. * You have more power than you realise. * More genius than you can imagine. * More wisdom and knowledge than you can ever access. * When you let go of the false belief that you are lacking or inadequate, in that moment, you arouse your potential. This is not a patronising statement to seduce you into a false belief. You have unlimited power, and accessing that power is the basis of my book 'Awaken Your Authentic Self.' My name is Tony Fahkry. I am a three-time author, expert speaker and life coach for over 15 years. I believe everyone has great potential within them. It is a matter of awakening it to reach your most efficient level. By focusing on what is meaningful to you, my book will bring value to your life by helping you think clearly and make decisions in alignment with who you are. My book will help you discover your genius, talents and gifts and awakening your highest potential. If you are ready to break free from your limited beliefs, thoughts, and ideas of the world, I invite you to purchase your copy of 'Awaken Your Authentic Self' today, so you can experience the results I speak of. Unless you challenge the status quo, you will remain one of the masses. One has only to look to mainstream culture to see the effects the media and marketing hype have on our society. Don't become of the masses. You have so much potential within you waiting to come alive. Believe that you are worthy and capable of great things and it will become your reality. Awaken Your Authentic Self is endorsed by the international acclaimed spiritual author and silver prize winner of the Nautilus award, Dennis Merritt Jones, who wrote the foreword.

Good vs. Evil - all Christians know the ultimate outcome of this perpetual struggle, but what about on a less cosmic level? What about our personal conflicts - urban violence, domestic violence, the daily challenge of making choices that are love motivated and honor God instead of being evil and self serving? This book follows a young urban couple, Samuel and Penny, as they try to honor their love for each other and Christ while confronting the attacks of an evil world. They are confronted by violence, greed, mayhem, hatred, prejudice, and revenge during an unusual courtship. But there's much that is unusual in this relationship. Penny's West Virginia heritage is not what you might expect, and Samuel has much to consider before he commits to a life-long relationship with her. His nominal Christianity is no match for the forces that confront him. There's much for him to learn, and discover. But he's not the only one with a quandary; Penny has to be very careful just who it is she marries. Not everyone can bear up under the weight of the legacy she is heir to, a legacy that is centuries old, dating back to the first human presence in the West Virginia mountain country she calls home.

2020 ASHE Council for the Advancement of Higher Education Programs (CAHEP) Barbara Townsend Lecture Award 2021 Transfer Champion-Catalyst Award from the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) 2021 Outstanding Publication Award, AERA Division J Publication and Research On My Own: The Challenge and Promise of Building Equitable STEM Transfer Pathways is the first book of its kind to provide a detailed, on-the-ground examination of the difficult paths—curricular, interpersonal, and institutional—that students must chart through community college. The book follows 1,670 two-year college students over four years as they begin STEM programs in the Midwest and documents their educational and life experiences as they moved toward, or away, from the prospect of transfer to a four-year institution. Their stories reveal that they were on their own, left to navigate the pathways to transfer without meaningful institutional support. The students pursued one of four pathways, or momentum trajectories: linear upward, detoured, deferred, or taking a break. The preexisting and lasting disparities in their access to education and financial resources, their experiences with teaching and advising, and the conundrum between support from and for family, among others, propelled them onto different trajectories in their quest for transfer. As this book makes painfully clear, the current state of transfer acts as a mechanism that perpetuates and worsens inequities in educational outcomes. As Xueli Wang argues, to cultivate an equitable STEM transfer pathway, culturally relevant and responsive supports that are accessible, welcoming, and validating must be put in place at the institutional level and appeal to the talent, motivation, and unique needs of historically marginalized students. In doing so, postsecondary institutions will be better positioned to fulfill their promise as an equitable pathway to bachelor’s degrees and beyond.
